chaps,
I have bought a second hand PC (win 10) and wanted to know - in very laymans terms - if there is a way of swapping a few apps from existing win 7 pc?
for free....
I have stumbled around, and got 400GB of data transferred over a network cable, now my attention turns to a few software packages..
Elite, Diagbox (running in VMWare) are probably all I care about. I have office but maybe I can download that for the new machine.
any thoughts on a way?
thanks
John

Re: windows software transfer / Diagbox
In layman's terms, software programmes can't simply be copied over from one machine to another and be expected to run - they have to be installed on the local PC.
The installation programme for each piece of software has have the correct registry entries written for a start, and all the location / paths of the files required to run the software indexed, so that's not going to happen John.
As far as a VM goes, this can be exported from the host PC and imported into the new PC. It all depends on VM software you are running and the state of the VM. The resources may now be different from previous host machine, so may need to be set up again. Hyper-V in Windows 10 Pro (if you are using that) can have problems importing a VM if the configuration versions of Hyper V are different too.
Back to your software transfer - you will need the installation media / files and ant licence data if applicable to reinstall John - unless the programmes are free of course.

If you are talking about the game Elite: Dangerous (which I am an avid fan of) you will need to download and run the installer again, log back into your account (you will then get an authentication email with a five digit code), and then, because your game details are saved at their end, you will be able to continue from the point you already got to. If you had custom control settings they can simply be copied across (but I cannot remember where the files are, although I can look them up tomorrow).

Meanwhile, back on planet Earth.....
No James, he's not talking about gaming, he's talking about the precursor to Proxia and Lexia - an ELIT - an early diagnostic tool used by PSA on earlier vehicles:
I will take off one demerit mark, as John typed "Elite" with an extra 'e' on the end...

Don't you mean James? Or am I wrong and you are an avid ELITE gaming fan?

Ok, I'll go to the naughty chair and apologise to James - but in my defence, the topic was related to Diagbox, so assumed this was to do with diagnostics and not Gamer's Weekly.

To be honest, I had forgotten about the ELIT (CitroJim has one, and I have seen him use it), and I am an avid fan of the original Elite (and its' sequels, right up to the current incarnation, Elite: Dangerous (which, in Virtual Reality, is truly awesome and immersive)), hence my reaction to the spelling of "Elite".
jgra1, IF you want to look at the new incarnation (Elite: Dangerous) you may well enjoy it. Although you start off in a Sidewinder (that you don't even own; you have, in effect, been LENT it!) you can buy, outfit and fly most of the larger vessels (including the Cobra MkIII (YAY!!)). All of the star systems from the original Elite are there (Lave, Diso, Leseeti, and so on), as is the original Coriolis (dice shaped) station, and the 'Blue Danube Waltz' when you use the docking computer. There is a LOT more (including the ability to explore the Milky Way Galaxy (and if you are the first person to explore a star system, get back to Human space and sell your data, that star system will then show up with your gamer tag attached (there are numerous star systems that show as "First discovered by Hell Razor5543")).
