Are these boken wires important?

Post by Bandit12 »

Evening guys and girls,
Following my successful swap of the front passenger side suspension strut i noticed a couple of broken wires.
broekn wires1.JPG
broken wires2.JPG
Looks to me like they are brake wear indicator wires but there is no warning light on dashboard. Point is I've MOT in a couple of weeks, is this a failure? Pads and discs look fine with lots of meat on them.

any advice is always appreciated

You do have a brake warning - but it is not a bulb - it appears on the dashboard LCD display with a message:

There is a repair kit you can get for these. If there are no warnings on the dash, then you should be fine.

Marc, is there such a kit for my C5? If there is, please could you let me know the details? Thanks.

No, none listed for the MK 1. The X7 had a modification as prior to build 11937, there were 2 connectors on the brake harness on the left hand side. After this build date they replaced it with one connector.

The kit on the X7 consists of a new harness and some Raychem heat seals, plus some heat shrink sleeves.

Hi Marc
Do you have a part number for that kit ? I ask, because I have had a similar problem on my C8 and I hope I might be able to modify whatever comes in that kit to fit my car.
I don’t NEED the pad wear warning, as I check often enough, and my MOT place told me it’s not required on my car, however I would prefer to have it working if possible.
Cheers

Brake pad wear warning is usually triggered by the single wire to the pad making contact with chassis ground (the brake disc), so if the wire gets disconnected/broken, nothing illuminates. Although this is 'fail unsafe', the pad warning is not regarded as safety-critical (like brake fluid loss), so is an acceptable arrangement.

Getting the correct route for the wire is important, to avoid it getting chafed by hub/wheel movement.

It won't be compatible - these are only listed for the C5 X7 and the C6 and are about £140 for the harness Julian.

For other vehicles - a simple compatible wire could be used to repair any break for these single wire systems.

Thanks Marc,

Err.. That’s a tough one - £140 for something I don’t need and which might not fit ......... :? Maybe I’ll give that a miss. It is, of course, just as Chris describes.

Besides, I’ve always been able to make up a simple lead and connector, it’s just that it’s one of those many jobs I’ve never got round to doing. Both sides broke ages ago, just ‘inboard’ of the plug in connector, and neither I, nor anybody else, was able to find a part number for that little bit of wire with connectors. When you mentioned a kit, I thought it might be just a couple of quid that I could adapt !

Thanks again.

Very true :-D Although I have been pleasantly surprised a few times by the relatively low cost of some minor fixings.

Thinking back, when my car was about 5 years old, it developed a bad leak from the twin turbo lubrication supply which necessitated replacing the oil feed and return pipe work. The pipe work was quite complex (item 14) and I reckoned it was going to be about £200 or £300. I was pleasantly amazed when it was only about £50 :-D :-D However, I reckon that was a mistake because I see it is now over £200.

I was also pretty pleased with myself for replacing it without having to remove the engine which is the official Citroen way ! It was only afterwards that I found out there had been a service bulletin about the problem so maybe I could have got them to do it ! No, thinking about it, I think I was happier having done it myself.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips and reassurance guys, yes defo no warning lamps on dashboard so I'm assuming the drivers side wires must be intact. Yeah be nice to pick up a repair kit for a few quid but at that price I think I will leave it :-)
