Radio power options

Post by delboy »

Hi Folks
My first time here. Great site I have already read some usefull posts and hope I con contribute some myself.I have just been given a 405 estate vintage 1992. Interesting the amount of owners with heater problems. I have the same myself and wish I had read more post before spending all last week trying to get mine blowing hot.I have a question with regards the Radio. Is the a way to have the radio on without the ignition switched. As at the mo I have to have the ignition lights on to hear the radio.I know on some units there a sequence to repower the unit for on all the time.
Many thanks

Not sure about 405's, but the radio fuse on a Xantia can be in 2 positions; one is for ignition feed, the other for permanent feed. Look for a spare half slot (so the fuse can be moved half it's length) next to the radio fuse in the fusebox.

Some wiring harnesses have an alternative connector on them which allow you to alter the way the stereo is powered, though I don't know if there's something like this on standard head units. Here's an example:
http://www.kenwoodeurope.com/languages/ ... -M6024.pdf (page 32)
Failing that, there's always the Bodge Method :-) All you'll need for this is a voltmeter (or a 12v lamp) and a connector block. Using the voltmeter or lamp determine which wires provide a constant 12v feed to the stereo (this is for the memory presets) and which wire only provides a 12v feed when the ignition is one. There's a slim chance these wires will be coloured red and yellow, but never assume, always check.
Once you're sure which wire is which, snip them both at a sensbile place and wire up the connector block so that the constant feed from the car goes to both memory and ignition wires on the stereo. Tape up the end of the ignition wire from the car so that it won't short on anything and Bob's your proverbial.
It might be worth having a couple of spare fuses on hand while doing this :-)

I don't know what stereos were fitted to the 405s, so I'm not sure if it needs a code. If it's a standard fitment, apparently you can ring Peuogeot and give them your VIN and they can find the code in their database. I say apparently, as I've never tried this. If it is standard fitment you can get it decoded for £10-£15 by your local car audio specialist. Best to check first, however.
