C5 drive shaft

Post by dowen »

2006 c5 2ltr hdi auto est.
Hi, I need some advice! I've had my c5 for seven years, absolutely brilliant car never let me down in 90k! However I bought a c6, so the c5 has been parked up for some weeks.
When I recently drove it round the block there was a noise from the front N/S, not the usual clicking c/v noise, more of a scraping, (sounds like the tire is rubbing on the inner wing!) I've double checked, it's not! It's in tempo with the revolution of the wheel!
I've pulled the drive shaft off, removed boots, and can't find any visible problems.
I'm about to find a scrapper shaft! Try that. It's not worth buying new there's no value in the car!
Can anyone throw some light on this scraping noise? And what is drive shaft part No.VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].
Thanks, Dave.

Correct VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Are you sure it's not just the discs that have rusted up (this will happen very rapidly) and will cause a scraping until all the rust is removed. Another possibility is the dist guards that can rust and break up - leaving parts of rusted tin inside the calipers / discs. Mine deteriorated rapidly and I haven't replaced them as they are about £40 each. When they broke up they left flakes of rust everywhere and took a while to pick / blow out.

As Marc says, I'd check the periphery of the discs to make sure any rust or crud isn't rubbing on the caliper. It's sometimes necessary to chip this off with a hammer or similar - but watch out for flying lumps of rust.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Thanks guys, no I've had both side brakes off, cleaned off with angle grinder sander wire brushed etc! They were pretty rusty! So I 'll put a scrappy shaft on. I just need to know part No. I just don't want to throw the car away!
