Would it be silly to part company with my Xantia because is it a future classic?

Post by ashy90 »

I'm thinking of selling my Xantia, however I am worried in case I would be making a mistake. I don't want to be selling a potential future classic!
My thinking is that even if the Xantia is a future classic it will only be a couple of more desirable models like activa and vsx.......not my car - which is a standard entry level year 2000 Xantia hdi with 160k miles on the clock.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Keep it long enough and anything has a chance to be a classic, but most not in the sense that people will be prepared to pay a lot of money for it. Lots of bog standard fiestas, escorts, sierra's, cortinas, capris fetch decent enough prices but they sold in huge numbers and there are many people who had them as first cars wanting to wallow in nostalgia or recreate their youth. The Xantia obviously has its following especially on here but its predecessors like the XM/CX/BX which arguably have more "character" than the Xantia, dont achieve that much at auction.

Check out and follow the Classic under £10k thread which keeps an eye on the many classic auctions. Its 63 pages long and I cant recall a Xantia appearing but I may be wrong.

This site here https://www.glenmarch.com/auctions/upcoming is excellent for catalogues and results of both the worldwide and UK Classic Auctions.

Mind this Citroen GS Birotor is expected to achieve a decent price, but it is a bit of an oddity with its wankel!

Of all the auctions that Glenmarch Track only 5 Xantia's have appeared in sales over recent years.

This should be the list here, and they all came from the same sale.

That's the $$$ question, no one knows. Think back....If I'd took that Maxi and stored it away??? Last year I bought a Z1000 from 1980. I bought it 'cause I wanted an iconic bike, dead cheap ( I payed 1000, non runner, no brakes, electrics cobbled) I've enjoyed riding it through the summer, never going to earn any money. The ST was only made for 2 years, top price 5000, that's with everything ABSOLUTELY original, right down to the JIS screws. If it was a couple of years earlier..and the wanted model....10,000 if done correctly. So who knows? If you've got the room, don't need to sell, keep. It may come to nothing, it may be worth a few quid.

Sell it and let me know what you got for it, then i can figure out what to ask for mine lol

Serious note i think they need to be used at least twice a week on a reasonable run ( 20-40 miles ) just to keep things in order, my issue is i do not want to put 350+ miles a week on the old girl

I think that's true of hydropneumatic Citroens in general: they respond well to regular use.
Our XM was parked up for a couple of years after we moved here, and it took a fair bit of use before things started to move and operate properly again. Bit like older folk getting 'set' if they've spent too much time on the sofa!

Car now in regular use again - at least weekly, plus a good few 100km runs, and some treks to France and UK - and thriving on it.

BX was similar when we stopped using it regularly - got decidedly creaky (and I don't mean the rear trailing arms!). Citrobics Rule OK.

keep it and use it as much as you can. For a huge wodge of buyers, mileage is King; and though many know what it says on the Odo isn't any real indication of how good a car, or an engine is; most Classic buyers 'd run a mile from any six figure Odo reading.

But if you really can't realistically use it, sell it now, hopefully to someone who's gonna appreciate it and might be able to see into 'Classic Status'. It'd be an awful lot of time sat doing nothing and collecting all sorts of 'non-use related issues' if you're gonna keep it mothballed til its a Classic.

....you could also possibly consider selling or returning whatever 'first' car you're using if the Xantia's a second car, depending on whether that's practical for you.

I think a lot of problems that people say are because a car has been sitting without use are actually due to the car being under-maintained while it was previously in use. A dry stored car should not deteriorate. My XJ-S was stored for 13 years without being touched, and other than replacing some suspension rubbers (which were 40 years old), it required nothing on recommissioning. My XM had sat un-touched for more than 3 years before I bought it,, and after fitting a new battery I drove it 300 km home, and in the 6 years since, it has not had a single failure nor any unscheduled maintenance.

On the value of Xantias, I think that they will increase, but only Activas and V6s are likely to gain any significant following. I am hoping that my V6 will be worth more soon.

Thanks for the replies!
I bought the diesel Xantia because I was travelling 30 miles each way to work every dsy. Now I am not. I also unfortunately do get a bit achey and uncomfortable after I've been driving it a while - mainly in traffic etc.
One thing I diddnt mention - if I do sell the Xantia, sometime next year I might buy a BX. The Xantia has been my main car while my Rover is off the road, however I would make the Rover my main car and have the BX as a second car/classic

To give your BX dream a kick start heres a list of the 15 or so BX's which have come up for auction at the classic sales over the last few years. I think you can discount the ex-museum/heritage collection ones distorting the "value" picture, in general they remain in the more bargain basement end of the classic market.
