Problems with my new C5 - already

Post by Peter.N. »

I thought I was going to be stuck at Trago Mills all night. I arranged to meet my wife back at the car, I got there first and decided to have relax, reclined the drivers seat, quite nice - until I tried to raise it again and it wouldn't. I was visualising driving home with a couple of the small hay bales that we had in the car behind me!

Fortunately after fiddling with it for a few minutes it decided to come up again. It seems if you switch it backwards and forwards for long enough then hold it in the forward position for a while it eventually operates. Any ideas?

Thanks

Peter

With the engine running?

Only that the seats will operate for a limited period with the engine off. Time will depend on state of your battery and whether the battery charge status unit decides to allow use of any accessories.

Didin't try it with the engine running Marc but it would continue to recline without the engine running.

Yes, could be that annoying Economy mode which stops things running if the engine is not on if the battery is not nicely charged. In theory with a good charge you get 30 mins. You might want to give your battery a charge now the weather has got nippy over there.

I've found that when cleaning the car that the seats go to sleep after a while.
Opening the door wakes them up.
But, the drivers seat remains active as long as I am sat in it, regardless of how long.

The battery charge status unit will only allow a certain amount of time on the X7 - it is highly sensitive and I was lucky to get more than 5 minutes of the Navidrive working with engine off.

Peter: The seats will only operate for a limited period without the engine on - vehicles with 'Welcome Function' (usually with the full leather pack and memory controlled seats) have to be able to operate. For those that don't know what that is - when enabled, when the driver switches off the ignition the seat reverses back to ease exit from the vehicle. When entering the vehicle and switching on the ignition the seat will revert to the last programmed driving position.

If you have this function on - image that every time you get in and out of the car it is using power from the battery (and electric seats use a fair bit of welly) and this can easily drain a battery if the journeys are short. I top mine up every 6 months with a conditioning charge.

Although I appreciate the function of the battery charge status unit, I felt it was overly sensitive in my case, and hence why I programmed the monitoring function back to the BSI's control instead. Now I get to use the radio for at least 30 minutes like I used to.

Not just full leather Marc. My half-leather seats have this function - or at least did have until I turned it off.

I turned it off for two reasons. First I didn't like the thought of the high current drain just as the engine (and hence charging) had been turned off. This would mean the battery has been drained of some of its capacity and will inevitably mean a shorter battery life. The second reason is that if there's anything stored, or has fallen down, behind the driver's seat then it stands a good chance of being crushed as seat mindlessly moves back. Definitely an unwanted side-effect!
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Exactly^ That's the reason I turned mine off - I found issues when having to fold the rear seats for transporting a lot of stuff (Saloon) - and the seat started squishing things - so turned it off and saved battery life as you say.

I tried it this morning with the engine running and it still wouldn't go forward unless you fiddled with the switch for a couple of minutes so hopefully its only a faulty switch. I never had any switches fail on my 406's in 10 years or anything else much for that matter. I'm beginning to wonder if I made the right decision. :?

Me too Peter. I have so many things wrong with a 4 year old car, it’s ridiculous. Too many bad design things about it and not enough good.
