Various trouble with c5x7

Post by cadmium »

Hi all,
I bought my dreamed c5 in June. Not having the knowledge I busted my hydraulic fluid reservoir and all lds was out. Resolved it my self, because was advice to call aa or rac to recover my car to dealers garage - I was worried that they will damage it even more because was clearly on the ground. I've replaced the tank with one from mk1 c5, looked the same. Refilled it with new lds and the car magically lifted up with a small push from a hand pump.
It was riding stiffer than previously. And when you put it to the highest position won't show it on the main screen as usual, even mid high was not showing.
I changed the front 2 spheres and adjusted the height of the car through lexia. It was higher at the front end when I bought it,now looks better but shows up to the mid high position. Still doesn't reach highest point and ride is stiff.
So, new lds fluid, 2 new front spheres and ride hight corrected through lexia to the best I could achieve and still can't get it to highest position and it's not so comfy as I think should be. No difference in sport mode. Rides the same as normal - so central sphere gone. Would changing it will make difference to the comfort ot the ride and will it make it rise to the top point?
Any advices and suggestions are welcome! And thanks in advance!

How did your tank burst specifically? Understanding the circumstances may also help with diagnosis.

What procedure did you use to change the heights using Lexia - you do realise that is for fine tuning really, and needs a specific set of measurements undertaken to get to a value that you put into Diagbox - which is then converted to a different value? See my post here for the correct procedure:

https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 18#p615218

There are 3 'centre' spheres on an X7, 2 on the rear axle and one at the front. Normal comfort setting requires all 7 spheres to be in operation, with Sport mode cutting out the centre 3. There should be a firmer ride (less roll and pitch).

Have you bled the system correctly? There is a specific procedure and of not followed you may have air in the system that will cause problems with air locks.

Have you run a Global diagnostic and what codes are being reported back?

When answering, pop your VIN up for me so I can determine exact model and options.

I pressed depressiorise by mistake while getting to know diagbox with the cap on. After changing the lds tank, For bleeding it I raised it to top and steered to full lock both ways couple of times. Then down and again steer. That's with the the cap off so air can go out. Both up/down/steer 3-4 times.
I just used lexia for the ride height and haven't tried to manually adjust it. I followed the procedure, but didn't work and by putting random numbers I lowered the front end a bit, uploading a picture to show how it looks. Couldn't find one from before, though. There's no any obvious difference with sport button on/off.
Vin nr. VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. The global test shows error about some triggering speed fault as far as I remember, because I don't have the lexia with me till Monday and don't know why it won't let me see the previous logs. But that error was showing before Tha tank busted. Today I raised it up and put it back to normal with the cap on and it felt like a dream on the way to work. No clue why!

Bleeding should be done on the LOW setting:
  • Level Ground
  • Remove LDS cap
  • Raise to highest suspension setting
  • Lower to lowest suspension setting
  • Very Slowly turn lock to lock several times - again slowly!
  • Switch engine off
  • Check LDS level is between marks A and B
  • Make sure there is no 'fizzing' of air bubbles.
  • If there are, repeat procedure
  • Return suspension to normal position
  • Replace LDS cap

The front looks a little high to me and the back too low.

OK, I'll definitely give it a try, but according to what I've read the level of the fluid is checked when car is depreasurised. If I just put it on low level I won't see any lds. Are you sure I won't top it up too much if it's on low level without been depreasurised?

No that's fine - there is an allowance for that as the customer is not expected to have access to a diagnostic tool that can fully depressurise the system. I appreciate the manual say this is a Citroen only operation - but that's not realistic.

If not using Diagbox to depressurise the system, then you need to ensure enough time is allowed for the system to fully lower and a minute or so to allow fluid from the internals to flow back. Just make sure the fluid is between the lines. Once the car is back to normal levels and in operation the fluid levels will of course lower considerably and you won't see the LDS level.

Thanks, I'll try that once I finish work and I'll keep you posted how it went. Hopefully it will do the trick and I'll be on a magic carpet.

If not, you'll just have to do the measurement routine (as best you can without the official tools) and then see if you can't get it back to normal.

When you say ‘very slowly’ for turning the steering wheel when bleeding, what the heck does that mean? :-). Can you give a time to go from fully right to fully left as my very slowly might be too slow or too fast.

! Well as in not warp speed - just turn the wheel slowly to allow the fluid to flow in and any air in the system time to evacuate as you turn it back and forth. If you di it too quickly, you may not allow enough time for any air to escape.

Yes, I got the reason, just not the speed. Ask an 18 year old what slow is. It might be fast to an 80 year old. :-)

I think I did it in about 30 seconds.
