C5 X7 water temperature.

My latest C5 estate is only showing two bars on the temperature gauge but the heater works better that the other one which reads 4 or 5 so I suspect its the sensor. Are these known to fail and can anyone tell me where it is? I could probably find it by trial and error but I'm getting lazy in my old age. Not having a manual doesn't help.

Peter what are you comparing here please for clarity? 2 X7s? a MK II and an X7? They are completely different vehicles if that is the case and if 2 X7s are they identical engines? - otherwise it's apples and pears. They may also have different A/C systems, climate systems, different cooling systems......

No,No,No, two almost identical X7's except that his is a more upmarket one. I know the Mk1 very well. My wife's 406 died and she has developed expensive taste's so we now have two.

So on the X7s, I have one VIN ending 133 and one ending 006 - as these the ones you are referring to?

So both the same variant of engine:

Item 2 is the water temp sensor in the water outlet tank

That's sneaky. Yes, 133 is the one I would consider normal the other is reading much lower, I suspect the reading was dropping as I was driving home but the heater was still good.

It would seem that its the thermostat. On ebay they are advertising just the thermostat without the housing, is this a viable option?

No, that's not for the X7 Peter - that's for earlier C5s.

If it's item 2 for your VIN ending 006, then it's part number 1338C1

Your'e up late Marc, thought it was only me. That number is for a sensor, I need a thermostat and the listing says it fits my car.

I checked the listing peter - and it's not for your car - they refer to a 2008 (incorrectly really) as the end of the MK II - which covers some very late registered MK IIs - sorry but your car is not in the listing you linked to.

Look at the age range - clearly a MK II. If it was for a MK III (X7) it would state 2008 -2015/16

The outlet water tank does all this as per the diagram. None of those thermostat types are even listed for the X7.

I'd double check the sensor before fitting a new thermostat, they're much more likely to fail.

Cheap enough at the motor factors to take a gamble on.

Thanks for all the info Marc and Gibbo. The listing is obviously incorrect then but you can get the complete assembly for about 30-40 pounds so I will go down that route.

I suspect after my journey yesterday that it is the thermostat, it was only about 4-5C and the temperature went from 2 to 4 bars depending on whether we were going up or down hill so I think the thermostat is not closing completely. If I change the assembly that should take care of both possibilities.

Part 1336Y9 is the part number for the outlet tank Peter. So that would appear correct.

Whether it contains the sensor too I can't say.
