Hi and :welc: to the Forum. Give it time; you need somebody who is knowledgeable about gearboxes to read your post and respond. If you were to post up the VIN (which will, for security reasons, be obscured so only Forum staff can read it) a Moderator can look up your vehicle, determine which gearbox it has (and the linkages), and let you know what parts may be needed, and how to test them.

Sorry, but hearing a car stuck in 2nd gear reminded me of this from my childhood

Odd coincidence, I was just in conversation with an American woman who used to have a Nash Metropolitan.
I used to see one every morning on my paper round (A white and yellow Austin Metropolitan)

I bought and sold a couple of those when I first started trading, to put it bluntly they were 'orrible' :)

I wish I could Alasdair but I'd need to know which exact car it is on and maybe some pics of the other end of the linkage.

If it's this beast I'd first be looking to see if the outer cable has become detached from the clinched end and is moving in and out instead of moving the gear.

He’s gone I think from his second post. He obviously was impatient, and didn’t supply the requested info, so best of luck with it
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

It's a Xsara Picasso, if that's any help.. I'd imagine the linkages are all the same on the pre 2006 ones.
