Xantia LHM leak

Post by admiral51 »

Why do they mis behave just at the wrong time, lavished lots of TLC, treat her with respect and she goes and springs a leak

I am talking about my Xantia in my profile not SWMBO :rofl2:

Will get pics up in a bit.

Leaking from the N/S/F strut, think it is the return pipe [-o<
Not leaking like a tap running but enough to give concerns.
DSC_0569.JPG
DSC_0568.JPG
It is leaking from around the clamp line, dry where the pipe feeds in/out, seems to be dry around the edges above the clamp line.

Apologies for the pics on the slant, just the way i held the phone to take pics.

Vin is in my profile but it is a 1999 2.0 Hdi non hydractive poverty spec :)

Just need it to last another 70 miles then i can park it up and use the C4 ( gets a reprieve ) as we take ownership of the boys C5 saturday morning.

Convinced i have seen this issue posted before but cannot find it or how to fix it

The return hose is still available, e.g. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 1245304649

But with the demise of spares for early C5s they might get harder to find.

Do i need a special clip tool, guess a screw thread clamp will not hold it in place .
Can i use some sealant to help or should it slot in like a grommet and hold in place with the clamp.

Getting quite fond of the old girl and dont want to bodge the job lol

What I used for this job were cable ties above and below the clip-line to hold the rubber block in place, tightened until the clip could easily be fastened with a pair of pliers.

The return hose and clip (same as on XM) still available from Citroen.
Make sure to clean up (and dry off, to prevent slippage) the contact area on the back of the strut, and position the hose accurately over the hole.
Good tip from Mike about temporary clamping with cable ties, while the metal clip is fitted.

It is a good tip....

That type of clip is all over Citroen's, investing in a couple of tools (Big/Long nose) is a really good investment in time saving.

Citroen pipe work HATES jubilee type clips....only ever use them short term.

Missed that post in the fact that it is available from Citroen still.

I have a 14 day window to put the Xantia off road, just out of curiosity my head says get an OEM part if i can, and is it a job that is doable on the driveway for a muppet like me.
Thinking i may need a pit/lift to be able to get decent access, not too sure on doing it with limited access on axle stands with wheel removed ?

Service.box keeps kicking me out so cannot find a price for both parts from Citroen

Hydraulic leak-back hose - 95 050 399
Tightening collar (circular clip) - 96 127 591

Both still available. Marc will probably be able to look up prices.

No need for lift or ramp.
Suspension on highest; jack car so wheel clears the ground, and support the body; remove wheel.
Good access.
Worth having a mirror handy to see the back side of the strut, and exactly where the exit hole is.
Keep grit out of things!

Ordered a couple of pipes and clips, however i am not impressed by the quality of the clip.

I have now ordered 2 of These as they seem to be better quality
Any thoughts on if i have got the right clip now ?

Thanks Chris
Looking forward to getting them to get it back on the road.

However same site has the same pipe and clip that i bought elsewhere Pipe and Clip
Clips are different, pipe is pipe, it is not high pressure, but the clip has to be right ?
Really good company to deal with, just not sure about the quality of the package deal in the link in this post ?

Most of those clips have several 'lips' on them, to cope with different strut diameters.
The rectangular pad fits over the rectangular port moulded into the pipe. This is the same size across various Citroen models, although some have a single, and some twin, leak-back pipes.
