2004 clio d4f712 erratic revs at 2000rpm when cold

Post by JC2019 »

Hi all again,
I've been fixing up this little clio for my sister.
It had a misfire so I swapped out the coil pack/leads and spark plugs and is now running much better. I've done the filters air, pollen, oil and replaced the sump pan as it was weeping oil with abit of rust, and obviously fresh oil.
I have noticed that when starting from cold and holding the revs at 2000rpm, the revs fluctuate up and down between 1800rpm and 2000rpm. It'll keep doing it until it warms up and then seems to stop. Any ideas what it could be?
Thanks

Couldn't say for sure, but when starting from cold I would keep my foot away from the accelerator altogether. Tha computa with a cold start will automatically increase revs if you leave the accelerator alone, which will naturally subside to normal tick-over revs.

Maybe attmpting to "warm up" quicker by attempting to maintain revs at 2000 with your foot on the gas confuses this process.

If no o2 sensor faults come up and the problem disappears when "it warms up and then seems to stop" Then it may just be an anomaly of your "warm-up" procedure.

If it wont tick over properly and that's the reason you need to keep revs up to 2000 to prevent it stalling when it is cold that may be a different problem.

Keep your foot away from the accelerator when starting from cold, and see if it that works. Personally rarely do a warm up stationary.... just start it and set off.

Thanks for the reply,
The car does tick over normally when started from cold. And I dont normally touch the throttle when starting up, Or do a warm up stationary either. It's only because I was doing something else that I noticed it and was just trying to see if it was a problem, I will try it again this weekend without doing it and see what happens.

I took the MAP sensor out last night and cleaned it up. I noticed it was only held in by the rubber orings and the wiring loom. Is there supposed to be bolts or a bracket to hold it in? I couldn't see anything around it that would suggest that it is but that seems quite weird that it can just wobble around with the engine.
Cheers

Havent got any of my clio fleet in front of me, but the new sensor certainly doent come with any mounting holes.

You may find this informative on a bit of troubleshooting on the MAP on a Clio. In particular it mentions the achilles heel of some clios the metal box which surrounds the CPU behind the engine at the top. It appears to be designed to chafe the wiring harnesses entering the CPU.

No endorsement or recommendation implied, make your own mind up.

Cheers for that, I will look at the video and see.
I have already checked out the metal box out and mine has been repaired in the past by a previous keeper. I believe it was done at Renault.
Thanks again
