Weird headlamp problem - Peugeot 207 1.4hdi

Post by Med_tech3 »

Hi. I have been puzzling this problem for a few months but now with darker evenings it is becoming more of an issue.
When I switch on the dipped headlamps my offside lamp doesn't come on. If I pop the bonnet, take off the black circular cover and push on the lamp holder, the lamp comes on and will stay on for as long as I have the lamps switched on. If I turn off the engine and restart it the offside lamp will not come back on until I press on the lamp holder again. I have wiggled the cables but cannot get the lamp to flicker. Once it is on it is on!
Can anyone shed any light on what it could be?
Dodgy lamp connections? Oxidised lamp holder pins?
Thank you.

As well as checking out the bulb* and its connections, also check out the fuse for that particular bulb/beam.
Not unknown for fuse connections to oxidise, and to behave oddly when placed under electrical load.

* Also possible that a headlight bulb might have an intermittent internal/filament connection, which 'makes' when pressure is applied, and continues to conduct when hot - only to fail again when switched off.
Just hazarding a guess.

Try removing all the leads, spray with contact cleaner, work the leads in and out a few times to eliminate any corrosion on the pins.
I have a similar problem with the nearside indicator. The bulb is in a socket/holder that is then bayoneted into the lamp proper. Unfortunately the holder terminals don't line up properly with those in the lamp.
The indicators will work for anywhere between five minutes and six weeks, then fail.
Opening the bonnet and just pushing the rear of the holder resets it, or even on lazy days, a swift kick to the headlamp.

I have sold my C4 Picasso. I got the turbo sorted then handed it to someone else to deal with!

Thanks for the replies. I will have a good old cleaning session at the weekend and hopefully sort it.
