Oil Advice

Post by ldare2000 »

Hi All
I have a 59 Plate C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 Diesel which has been badly looked after and I don't think has been serviced for years and years. The engine is quite noisy, noiser than others.

Normally I used fully synthesic oil from Home Bargains but I guess this cheap oil has less additives.

Is there an oil out there that genuinely is worth paying extra for and what would be recommended for trying to proling the life of a badly treated engine?

Look here on our Wiki.

https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/wiki/Citro ... arbox_Oils

You have a DV6TED6 1.6 engine with diesel particle filter. Therefore you need a low SAPS (prevents less ash entering the exhaust and therefore prolongs emissions equipment life.

So you really want a fully synthetic 5W30 oil for this climate and engine.

Hi Marc
I appreciate your time in replying. Out of the Total Quartz range which offer 5w30 what I am not sure is which is the 'best' for a worn engine? Looks like there are 2 or 3 options?

Kind Regards
Louis

Total change their names frequently, Quartz INEO ECS 5W - 30 is one of the newer ones. However getting a fully synthetic is what’s important as they are non mineral oils and are loaded with additives for better lubrication, wear protection and detergents.

But the point is that if the damage is already done to the engine, then there’s not much more an oil can do as it’s there to help reduce damage in the first place.

I think the key is more frequent oil and filter changes about every 6 thousand miles might help. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the brand at this point, the correct spec and grade are what is important and the frequency of changes.

Change oil now and in three months with filters and it should be good yearly from there .

Never been convinced about these extended oil change intervals (but, never had anything new enough to run on synthetic)
