ZX Info needed again

Unread post by uhn113x »

Right folks - picked up ZX yesterday, and nearly got out of the habit of waiting for it to rise [;)]
Was blowing F9 - reason being that wiper arm had been fitted 120 degrees out and was trying to wipe the bulkhead! Fitted it correctly - wipers do not park, and intermittent wipe does not work. Traced fault to relay/timer.
Questions - is this the same as the back one, and which relay is it ?(presume it is one of those behind fuses)
And, is anyone breaking a ZX and has one of these?
On the rear seat back, there is a plastic device in the centre with two holes - presumably something to park the belts into. At the moment it appears to be dangling on a sort of nylon cord that comes out of a hole in the seat fabric. How should it be fitted?
Finally, has anyone a jack and wheelbrace for this beastie - yes, I know I could use any jack and socket or spider, but I would like to get the original type if possible. I assume the wheelbrace has something at the end that fits the grooved spare wheel retainer bolt head? Could someone clarify this, please?
Sorry for all the questions, folks, but I will answer yours when you get your DS !!
Thanks

Hiya Mike, dunno anything about relays -- sorry [:I] But the plastic thing in the back seat may have been fitted by prev owners, i.e. I dont have one, my seat belt holders are bolted through to the floor and just poke up throught the middle at the back of the seat..
The rear wiper blade is smaller than the front if thats any help, so it could be swopped to the front in an emergency. [:)]
The wheel brace is the cranked one with a socket one end and a 3/4 hook on the other, the hook radius fits the bolt that lowers the spare wheel, and hides in the slot on the right hand side in your boot, the socket bit sits over the round thing on the floor under the slot.
Watch your toes when you lower the spare wheel! [:0] my retaining hook falls off its lowering bolt allowing the cradle to drop to the floor, followed by the spare skiding down off the cradle and trying to break your tootsies!! lmho..
I dont know what the 'proper' jack looks like, it was missing from my car so I just bought a lil trolley jack for it, and keep it in the boot..

The wiper relay is quite easy to recognise :
It's a larger specie than other relays - and have several odd base contact pins (7) different sizes.
It should not be possible to confuse it with other realys :
- the blinkers relay would also be a large specie - but only have 3 contact pins equal size.
- standard (switching) relays are smaller - have 4-5 contact pins equal sizes.
Should be located in the fuse/junction box.

There should be another clip to prevent it doing that! (And also presumably in case of failure of the main bolt on the motorway!).
Its always worthwhile releasing the bolt every few months, just to make sure you can. When I bought mine (from a Cit dealer, WITH the 1xx point check done) it was jammed solid! Which would be very inconvenient on a wet Friday night at the side of the M6 [:(!]

Hi all
I have investigated a bit further:
Anders
Found it - will need to get a replacement, as it looks different physically to rear relay, which has a mounting tag
James
It was the relay, not the blade, that I was going to swap. Yeah - I do not appear to have the correct wheelbrace.
The safety belt thingy in the back seat is apparently OE, but should not be dangling in mid air - it is to retain the belts when not in use.
The plot thickens now, as I need to do a scrapyard tour for a wiper motor - being left trying to park when stalled must have been too much for it - one armature winding is totally cooked. Bah! amateurs! Or maybe 'professionals'?

I think the item regarding the rear seatbelts is almost an upside down "Y" shape.
On my ZX1.9D it is attached to the seat fabric and the belt buckles clip into it to keep them out of the way. On mine it doesn't dangle, but is firmly attached. Perhaps your cord is too slack?

No "Y" rear seat belt fingy in my car, [:I] but there are an extra pair of lil short belts, presumably for a kiddies seat (?) bolted to the floor under the back seat, I just locked them together and wrapped them in rag to stop them rattling around under there, [8)] And as the new rear seat has a centre arm rest I just hide my centre seat belts behind that..
Talking about the rear seat, getting it to slide easily is a pain! it slides great if I undo the two outside bolts a bit, but as soon as I tighten them up again it seems to lock the seat, so I will try fitting a couple of washers under the bolts to see if that solves the problem..
No back up hanger anywhere in sight on my spare wheel cradle? where should it be? and what does it look like? I assume it goes on one side or the other as the spare wont come out if its in the centre? I was behind a lorry when it dropped an 8X6 sheet of glass off the side!! it took me forever to get all the tiny bits of glass out from under the bonnet and it even got into the air vents.. I was on the M62 at the time doing about 70 ish in an XJS I had just bought for my boss! luckily I saw it flutter slightly just before it flew off and had time to hit my anchors hard! it was a rather hairy moment! [:0] Dodging a bouncing spare wheel might not be so easy... [:0] [:(!] so I would like to fit the safety clip if I can get one..

Dom
I think you are right - the nylon cord has probably broken or come unhitched - I will need to do a bit of seat dismantliing to see what is going on.
James
I would be interested in this, as well

Unfortunately I can't help with dismantlement, as the back of the seat is metal. If it was a front seat, I've done one of them.
The upside down Y thingy looks to be OE on mine. It's just something to lock the bottom buckles into when your rear belts aren't being used.

I can't find any reff to this in either of the two DIY manuals I have on the ZX? anyone know what they look like or where they fit onto the spare wheel cage?

Its just towards the bumper at the rear of the jack. I think the clip is fixed to the underside of the body, and it holds a loop at the right side of the spare wheel cage. Its just visible in Haynes (petrol version at least):

Hmm I know about the lil metal loop, I thought it was the lifting handle, duhh, [:I] but there is nothing fixed to it or even close to it that I can see, [B)] I will visit the main dealers tomorrow and see what they can find on their computer.. [:)] Thanks for the info. [:)]

On the subject of the jack and wheelbrace etc, the latter should be stored on the side of the boot somewhere. Anyone got any clues as to where and how?
I was told by Citroen that there should be an ole on the right hand side for the wheelbrace to poke into, but my ZX doesn't have one.
Any advice gratefully appreciated

There should be a clip with a screw fastener on the RHS of the boot. When in position, the hook of the wheelbrace just reaches the base of the back seat. (May be different in models with the sliding seat though).

Dom.. On the right hand side of your boot, fixed to the floor, you will find a round thing (?) above it there is a slot in the side panel roughly behind the fuel filler cap.. The wheelbrace hook end goes up into the slot, then the socket end that fits the wheelnuts sits on the round thing on the floor. It is clearly visable when in situe, if you cant see it when you open the boot then sadly you dont have one.. :-(
The original car jack sits to one side in the spare wheel cradle under the boot, again if you cant see it when you lower the spare wheel down then that too is missing.. Both were missing on my car, so I got a wheelbrace from the scrappy for a £1 and bought a lil trolley jack which now lives in the boot..
