The ABS / ESP ECU also controls the electric parking brake. So any issues with the ESP system will cut off some of the handbrake functions. However, there are over a hundred fault codes relating to the electronic parking brake, so you really need to have it read with a Lexia system with Diagbox to find the fault codes. If you can do that and post them here we may be able to help identify the issue. Without that, it will be hard to diagnose where the fault is originating from - as it could be an ABS wheel sensor, the wiring or even a component in the EPB (electronic Parking Brake) itself.

Also post up your VIN when you get the codes.
