Replacement zeal steering gear valve C5 2006?

Post by Axa »

Is there anyone who got the part number or exact dimensions of the top Simmering zeal on the steering rack valve?

Pinion axel are rusted so the zeal is leaking. I were give the advice it could be solved by press the zeal ~3mm further down to make it zeal against non rustet metal. Unfortunately the zeal is already 3mm down.

I was also told a new zeal could be pressed down on to the old one. But as the pinion axle is severely rusted I can not see how that could work...

Maybe some kind of axial seal glued to the axle. And a flat smooth washer glued to the top of the valve could work...

Any suggestions how to proceed is greatly appreciated. I would think I'm not the only one to encounter this problem.

Ive attached photos showing how this can be prevented by a short pieces of bicycle inner tubing and marine grease inside. I would think coating the axle and top of valve with a thick layer marinegrease only would also keep the rust off if redone once a year..

Unfortunately, the water penetration creates the rust and the rust means the seals no longer do their job. If this has already happened, there is the likelyhood that the rust will have penetrated inside the rack and will soon contaminate the internal seals.

Many of us here with C5 X7s are on our second or third steering racks - but the issue doesn't seem as common on the MK I or MK II C5s.

Replacing the seal won't help if the pinion has rusted - it needs coming off and replacing or refurbishing.

On the MK II there was a Steering Valve Kit available that included the seals - post up your VIN and I'll check the part numbers for you.

You could investigate the use of a speedi-sleeve https://www.skf.com/uk/products/seals/i ... index.html I have used them on worn crankshaft seals with success.

Other brands of similar products are available.

Speed sleeve looks interesting. But as it sounds like I should disassemble the valve to inspect the other seals I guess it's easy enoug to put the shaft in a lathe and remove the rusty surface.

My 2006 is a MKII and VIN number is in you PM... Thanx allot for looking into it! ☺️

Ok, so here is the kit - it is part (1) below and consists of items B, C, D & E. So this may be more suitable for you if you are planning on the DIY route:
C5 MK II Steering Rack Valve Kit.PNG
However, it is probably not worth it to be honest as the price is far more than a second hand refurbished rack!!

Part number 4048AJ, price with Citroen in the UK is £559.01 inc. 20% UK VAT!

A rack is part number 4000LX and should cover models with the following markings on the rack: MARKING 60DHLK 60DHGX 60LYBE 60DHJY).

Aaaha, I miss rerad thinking it was a valve Cervice kit available.. With al seals bushing and orings..

I will disassemble the valve tonight or tomorrow and have a look if the seal still looks shiny inside.

If I'm lucky it might be possible to get it to work just by brush off the rust and coat the shaft with plastic steel as it afak is noy much pressure inside,. Just the static and friction losses in the return line up to the reservoir.. .?

Changed my mind. After successfully removing the rust from the part of the axle just above the, I concluded its probably no rust below the seal at all. That space must be filled with circulating LHM all the time and afak rust could not form in that environment.

So now plan A is to get an 4mm O-ring a bit tighter then the diameter of the axle. Then push it down using this nut I've threaded in locking screws into. If that solution don't leak I will probably ad more locking screws to secure it good. And then some gasket glue between the nut and the axle to seal that gap from both LHM leaking out, and from water and rust to enter.
What you think?

LDS, not LHM. LHM is used by Citroens up to the Xantia and XM, LDS is used by the C5 and C6. They are NOT interchangeable.

Give the pinion a good coating in white Marine grease - that has good sticking properties and protects prop shafts and the like on sea vessels - so should provide some more protection.

Good point James. I confuse them from time to time, but on in the Forum's! :-) LDS is what I got in the shelf, and nothing else!

And the grease I got in the grease gun and some tubes is Marine grease. It's not white however, but close to clear. Really sticky and much more resistant to moisture and salt the regular grease. Rear trailing arm roller bearings are full of it. And they get one pump of refilling once a year..
