Soldering aluminium

Post by uhn113x »

Thought I would start a new topic on this, although it was mentioned in a post about aircon.
You must use leadfree solder, and no flux at all. The secret is to scratch through the solder pool with a stainless steel probe to remove the oxide layer. In actual fact, as you need to heat the work up to softening point, is is more welding than soldering.
I have successfully done this many times, and a very neat job is possible

I was considering using a multicore aluminium solder in an atmosphere of CO2 provided from a mig welder. THe aluminium I was thinking of attempting is very thin!

I have used lumiweld to good effect too. It is still available, I got mine at a motorcycle show but you can get it from L B Restorations on 0121 358 7448.
