Citroen Relay Injector coding

Post by pogo001 »

Hi.
I have a 2008 Relay 2.2 hdi. When I start it from cold or warm, it runs lumpy and blows out diesel white smoke. When its fully warm, it runs perfectly, good MPG, smooth idle, and just passed emissions test. Diagnostics shows injector 2 is faulty, I have already removed and 'cleaned' without success, so am going to buy a new injector.
My question is, I have seen injectors for sale that dont need coding, but cannot find a definitive answer if they do or dont need coding. As my work vehicle, I want to have everything in place, re coding arranged immediately after changing, so a definite answer would be very helpful. Can anyone advise me?

.....Also.....
If I just changed the nozzle, would this need recoding? Im handy with the spanners, not so on the technicals with diesels!

If this is your Relay VIN ending 772, then it has the Ford Puma 120 engine and a Visteon Injection ECU. All indications are that the injectors must be coded. I have little information on this ECU being a Ford basically, but you will need a compatible diagnostic tool to do it.

Thanks. The VIN does end in 772, so I will ask the diagnostics guy if he has the tool to re-code.
Would it need coding if just changing the nozzle?

The point is that the injectors are precisely calibrated individually, as a unit, so I suspect that making any changes may render the calibration useless - but I would check with an injector SPECIALIST for confirmation.

Most reasonably modern professional diagnostic tools that any decent garage would have eg Bosch, Snap-On, Launch etc should be more than capable of coding injectors.
