particle filter additive level too low peugeot 3008

Post by Elle0101 »

Hello all, I got an error message on the display that particle filter additive level too low. I've been in service few months ago and they had to refill additive. Today i've been on dignostic with my car and it shows, that car has 97% of additivum. We restared the control unit but the error has showed again. So what's wrong? Car goes normally. P3008 1.6 eHDi

Hi and welcome.

Generally the additive levels are not measured, they are estimated and they don't actually have a level - so I'm not sure if that 97% you are referring to is for something else?

Do you have a screenshot of the diagnostic readings - that might help us determine what is going on, and also your VIN so we know what systems you have on the vehicle.

When the garage topped up the additive level. did they reset the additive counter properly? If they did not do this, then the engine ECU does not know and may still think the additive tank is too low - again because it is not actually measured, it is just estimated. It is very important the ECU has the additive reset to 0 when the additive level is tanks is filled up.

now I don't understand at all... Yes, I have the impression that after the additive was refilled that the diagnostic was used. could the unit have been badly reset? Or i don't know...

anyway, can I ride a car normally? I hope nothing happens until the problem is resolved

thank you

Hi

Basically no - not really. If the computer thinks the additive level is too low and the warning is ignored, it will soon stop injecting the additive into the tank. When this happens, the particulate filter won't regenerate. If the filter stops regenerating, then it will soon become clogged up with soot. If the filter gets too full of soot (say 75% or over), then it won't be possible for the filter to regenerate and it will need removing to clean out or replacing.

When the warning light about the additive level first comes on, the engine computer calculates how many miles or kilometres until your next service. If it thinks that the additive will last until then it won't put the warning on. If it thinks there are too many KMs to go before the next service, it will put the warning on to get it refilled sooner.

So even if the additive has actually been filled up by your garage - unless the computer is reset correctly, then the engine computer will not know that that the tank has been filled up (because the level is not usually physically measured - only estimated).

As for how long you can drive, it is hard to say as we don't know how much additive the engine computer thinks is in the additive tank. What it will do at some point is start to limit the engine power you have if the warning is ignored after so many miles. So you should be ok for a while - but don't leave it too long and don't do a lot of miles - as it will only give you a limited mileage before it goes into back up mode.

So you need to make sure the garage properly reset the additive counter on the engine ECU. A main dealer would of done this for you properly as they have the correct diagnostic tools to do this. If you went to a different garage then you take a chance..

Hi, I am new here,
thanks for the suggestions on this topic.
As the dealer is charging this service a bit dear, I was looking for options to do it with some local mechanic, what do you think? Thanks again

Just make sure your trust the mechanic and that they know how to do this operation. They need to be able to reset the additive counter, so need to have a suitable diagnostic tool.

thanks Marc,
Did this with a Peugeot dealer for around 300 euros, the other mechanics didn't convinced me much so opted for the dealer where I bought the car.

Sometimes peace of mind is more important (and can be less costly if you have to pay for the job to be done twice). Glad you have it sorted.
