ZX TD Turbo boost pressure

Unread post by Paul Thomas »

I am considering tuning my ZX when the weather is a bit dryer.
What is the maximum turbo boost pressure I can safely go to without significantly decreasing the life of my turbo/engine etc ?

Paul,
0.8 - 1.0 bar is stock for these engines. From what I have seen going much higher than 1.15 bar results in severely shortening the life of the head gasket. Do a search on the web for tuning 306 TDs as I think there is plenty of info out there.
Don't forget that if you're measuring boost pressure you need to do it with full load and engine over 3000rpm - eg hard hill climbing in 3rd.....

I thought full boost was produced by about 2000 rpm? Granted, uphill is necessary at full throttle to get max load...and max boost!

As I was running my car with the intercooler removed I noticed that the turbo is definitely blowing at idle which on both of my 1.9s is 1000rpm

The turbo will produce an airflow at idle; hope you didn't blip the throttle through as you'd probably overspeed the turbo with no output restriction.. The amount of air moved at idle by the turbo is still less than what the engine consumes...
