Michelin Introduce Puncture Proof Airless Tyre which may.....

Post by bobins »

......... or may not be technically 'puncture proof' in the commonly accepted sense, and may have issues in its current form where it can pick up and throw stones the size of pea shingle if you drive through deep shingle, and may have issues where you happily drive with a severely deteriorated tyre without knowing it. Apart from that - not new technology as this sort of thing has been available for smaller utility tyres for ages. Apart from that - quite a good idea :-D

That rules us out in rural Wales where road chippings are as common as our rain! We'd probably get sued for pepper spraying the public.

Wonder if there is a reason it could not also have (supple) sidewalls?
That open design makes a good demo, but what happens when it fills with mud, stones, or even water?

That reminds me of the old Rudge tyre which was superseded by the inflatable inner tube type. Plus ca change, eh?

I wonder if they fitted sidewalls....... then that'd effectively make an awful lot of closed cells - which wouldn't allow much deformation of each cell due to the air trapped in each cell :-k If they provided an air passage between each cell then they might hit problems with overheating due to the air being rapidly compressed and moved from cell to cell :-k
Is it, actually, just a gimmick ? :?

We had 'run flat' tyres in the 1950s

Just have a fine mesh sidewall, a bit like net curtains.
