Hi,
I have a xantia 1.9td 1994 124k,when I start the car it it runs really rough, the idel is up and down and it smokes really bad, the car starts first time and it only runs roughly for about a minute or so, or until I rev it hard for a bit.

I have has something similar...
I bought a car that has no choke (bad choke sensor) so when turned on you must rev it to keep it alive, there is a two wires going to the bosch pump, one is for gas pedal other is from choke sesor that is mounted in coolant water divider near by, that one was loose all the time (it should be under tension when cold, and loose when hot)...
It cost around 200kn in slovenia country near by (50km) (18pounds) fits every one from AX, BX to my XM...
Now it starts fine, works little bit rough with lot's of smoke, i suspect a bad diesel injector...
After i rev it up a little everything is normal, motor is very smooth and quiet (from outside) inside there is other problem with engine mount...
I advise you to check some diesel handyman to check injectors, compression, bosch pump, than you will be for sure...
In my country that control cost about 200Kn (about 18 pounds), and every injector is 180kn (16pounds rough) you should change them all...
HDI engine is completly different thing and this is not worth what i told you...
