Following the purchase yesterday of a 1980 Z1000ST that hasn't moved for 10 years I need to add 2 very important items to the workshop shelf. Namely a degrippant, I've always used red diesel due to it's searching qualities, but I feel it may not cut it on this job. The other thing is a good contact cleaner.
Cheers all
Oh and does any know of a good resin for sealing the inside of fuel tanks, and what size of holes can it do, I've got one the size of a penny? I was thinking of taping the outside, pour the stuff in and swill, remove the tape and make good with a bit of P38 or whatever is used these days?

Re: contact cleaner and releasing agent
The best contact cleaner that I have found is something call "Servisol". The normal stuff is Servisol Super 10, which is a switch cleaner and lubricant, and (in my experience) does a good job.

I think you'd need to repair the hole with epoxy putty before attempting to seal the tank. I have used quik steel https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QUIKSTEEL-QU ... SwdQNZyjhD on a sump it worked perfectly so it should be fine on a tank.

This stuff used to be good as it is developed for fuel tank repairs. "Petropatch"

Re: contact cleaner and releasing agent
Cheers Stu, I'll have a look at that depending on the results of the Quiksteel. Just had a look back through another post and Neil ( NF) uses diesel and atf as a releasing agent, I have both of those.

ATF and acetone 50/50 mix is pretty good for freeing up seized items as is the more expensive plusgas. I get my acetone for free off the wife (unknown to her)

So ATF seems to be the fluid of choice, I'll have a word with my better half as well . I hope the old beasty appreciates it.

Acetone is cheap I tried to buy it once but I felt odd asking for nail varnish remover. I ended up getting toothpaste!

Re: contact cleaner and releasing agent
I've found the acetone at our local Bricomarché in a litre bottle for degreasing, so no embarrassing queues. Just need to clean the rust from the inside first. I've read that Hyrochloric / Muriatic acid along with a few nuts / screws will do this (this I also have). Followed by baking soda to neutralise it. Obviously working outdoors. Any thoughts?
Cheers

Re: contact cleaner and releasing agent
I was painting with Hammerite a couple of days ago. Been here for years and was getting pretty hard to work with.
Going to put a splash of acetone in and it wasn't a bottle with a tiny hole in the neck, where you have to squeeze the bottle to get some out.
Oh No! it is a standard bottle. Tin half full of acetone and it splashed all over the work I had done the day before.
Worramess
Fixed now but could have done without that.
