Lost mileage puzzle...

Unread post by PaxmanMerv »

Afternoon all!

Heres an odd one to get you scratching your heads & hopefully get me out of the deep brown smelly stuff!

308 didnt unlock when i hit the fob button yesterday. No big deal, use the key...old skool technology never fails. Jumped in & turned the key. Now it gets spooky.. as well as the fob not working, have gone from 55000miles to 5000miles.. Anyone come across this before & can shed some light on whats going on?🤔

Are you sure you're not reading one of the the trip counters instead (maybe after accidentally hitting the stalk to change the trip computer settings?

I ask as both the BSI and the dashboard ECU record the mileages. One updates the other depending on which has the highest reading. It's another reason why when some people replace their BSI with a second hand one off another used vehicle they often find their mileage has shot up! As soon as a higher mileage BSI is attached it will talk to the dashboard ECU to compare notes and whichever of the 2 is the higher mileage will be changed for both. So I can't see how your mileage has suddenly dropped and the reason why I suggest it might be one of the trip counters....

Marc, I have a duff speedo on my Xantia and need to replace. Does the mileage swap also work on the Xant, or is it too old (hopefully)? I had understood that it (Xantia) took mileage from the BSI.

Hi Harry - the display is digital for the new look models - which I think yours is. There are no separate components form Citroen - they sold the complete dash itself. But these don't have a BSI as such, they have a CPH, which is a precursor to the BSI. Data is limited on these, so I can't say for sure whether information is exchanged or not for sure.

Pop up the VIN Harry for this Xantia (or Reg) so I can see what components it has.

Yes, no component parts - just the instrument cluster Harry as I thought.

On a Xantia the mileage is only stored on the instrument panel itself so if you use a second hand one with a lower mileage your car will inherit the lower reading 😎
