Towing C5

Post by zeeshanzaki »

I want to know in case of brake down how to tow C5. Couple of years ago when tow truck try to pull the car from the front he can't find any hook to attach winch. After that I found the location in the bumper and looks like it need extra piece to attach to pull. Just wondering, does it come with the car or do I have to buy it.

Take a loom at your spare wheel kit in the cavity under the boot. There should (unless it has been lost) a towing eyelet that screws into the mount behind the bumper hole.

Is it allowed (legally) to tow a vehicle using this eyelet (with a chain, cable, etc.) by another vehicle?

Towing regulations (on public roads) vary between countries. In Spain, towing by a rope is not legal, and the use of A-frames/front wheel lift was only legalised a couple of years ago. Check out your local laws.

Thanx for your reply. I just wanted to know, because here in Israel, the only towing method is by a towing truck and since zeeshanzaki asked about the eyelet, I wanted to know if it's legal to tow with it.

They are legal in Europe for sure - as are supplied with most PSA vehicles at least over the last 20 years. I would suggest that you wouldn't tow with this setup for long distances - as it is not good for automatic gearboxes and hydractive vehicles - but moreover because of the risks. I suggest that the tow eye is probably only intended for emergencies like getting out of a flooded road or a short distance.

I don't think they have Halfords in Israel Gibbo  However there are quite a few 1 star reviews complaining that is snapped and bent on first use.

Stick to the recovery / rescue service and get it towed properly if you have such a service there. The handbook states that the towing eye is for low speed over short distances only.

Back in the fifties I was towed from Southend back to Birmingham on a tow rope, customer's car and mad mechanic driving the tow car. :-D

Those were the days Gibbo - I think most of us had the old style tow rope, wood and the like!

I think that the fact that it's forbidden to tow, even with tow pole, is quite logical. as Gibbo told that he was towed in the fifties, when the vehicles weren't equipped with power assisted brakes and steering, which of course aren't functioning when the engine is off. one more thing is, I think, that the driving speed, sixty or seventy years ago, was significantly lower.
