Gearbox troubles

Unread post by mikal »

Well it had to happen. The car feels unloved so it threw a hissy fit.

Driving along then a big jolt, then 3 secs later another.....slowed down a bit expecting to see con rods or whatever to blow thru the bonnett but it carried on OK. Well that was yesterday. Today BIG jolt after 10 secs of driving, warning "service" lights, gearbox icon and battery icon. Car stops and conks out. Restarted, and it was obvious that there is a GB prob. Managed to coast 200 yds downhill home.

Is it dead??

It'll need a diagnostic to determine exact cause I'm afraid - the gearbox ECU may have disabled the system until the fault is rectified - could be valve blocks or something simpler - but guesses will abound until you get the car read with Diagbox and see what it's not happy with.

Ran diagnostics and cleared a load of faults that came from the battery being flat but the abs/brakes fault came back. Mech says its the ecu that has a fault and its looking like 600 quid

Yes but did you ask which faults remain from the diagnostic? - If you have those we can at least see what it is pointing too.

Marc.

The diagnostics guy said its the ecu. He cleared all the faults after I disconnected the battery, and 200 yds on driving home the usual lights came on so I drove back, plugged in diagnostics and badda bing ecu fault.....600 quid he reckons

But what were the error codes (did he tell you)? Without them it is not possible to properly diagnose the fault.

Yes, we went thru all the faults and he said they were consistent of having the battery disconnected. Then the ABS light came back on and we then diagnosed that one and it was the ECU

Re: C5 -parking brake fault, abs & esp lights on

Unread post by mikal »

Have the same fault on my exclusive auto. Techie cleared all the faults associated with a dead battery and within 100 yds of drving home the usual suspect of "electric handbrake" fault and abs/service lights etc came on. Tech assured me it wasnt the brake switch but the engine ecu. Main faults diagnosed were U1213, U1208. CAN message engine ECU All parking brake.....new ecu needed. Anyone any idea what the part number etc it is

Which ECU are you referring to? The Engine ECU, the ESP ECU (that controls the parking brake)? A bit drastic to replace the Engine ECU I think - not without some assurance or testing - there could be many reasons for it.

If engine ECU: Part 1943VT, priced at £1254.46 new inc. VAT - another reason why I would make absolutely sure it is this - and for that reason, I would strongly suggest a second opinion - even if it means you have to take it to Citroen for a diagnostic.

I've moved this issue from the other thread to keep it together - as I answered your original question there.

If you are going for a second hand ECU - you have the part number in my post above, but be aware that the engine ECU, the BSI and the key fobs are matched. You will either have to replace the BSI and the fobs as well as the engine ECU or have the engine ECU virginised and this will need to be re=paired to the BSI. Another reason why I suggested it is confirmed as the ECU and not the wiring or other component.
