Track Rod ends

Unread post by KennyW »

Hi All,

The X7 is knocking from f/o/s track rod end, solution changed T.R.E., done, still knocking :( , on further inspection the casing is knocking against the ball joint. No play in joint itself.

Is this a faulty TRE or something else I've missed.

Previously changed them with no problems.

Thoughts please.

If it's knocking going over bumps but more significantly braking or accelerating it could be the bush to the left of the number 32 in Robin's Diagram above. That's what happened to mine - not a driveshaft clunk, but a forward and backward clunk. It was the lower strut support bush, which although is not shown as available as a part (Citroen only sell the whole strut support), you can get the bushes cheaply from a motor factor and any competent mechanic can replace them. Bushes were about £10 ish.

Your may not be this, but it took us a while to find where it was coming from - got it on the ramp and some heavy pushing and pulling on the lower strut support replicated the noise. I've highlighted in green where the bush deteriorated causing the knocking:

Thanks for all the replies, if you rotate the TRE, it would appear the ball joint casing strikes against itself. This the only way I can describe it.

I shall check the opposite for the same effect if so I will look elsewhere.
