timing belt edge catching ?

Post by tomj25 »

hi all my Picasso has started to make a rattle noise somewhere around the timing belt area , i took the covers off to have a closer look and found that the timing belt looks as if its catching somewhere as the edge is marked and found bits of frayed belt inside the cover and when i started it the belt is not running straight is wobbling bad can anyone give me a idea off what it could be, its a 02 picasso 2ltr . thanks tom

When was the timing belt last done and were the pulleys replaced at the same time? A VIN would help us too.

Loose bottom pulley?
Is it not the pulley holding the belt inline. If loose it would both rattle and allow the belt to wander.

I had this on my DW8 Dispatch:

I had the garage fit a new belt and it was fine. No new pulleys needed.

It could be any number of things. I would be inclined to get the whole timing belt kit replaced, as this should cover all of the reasons for the problem (as well as replacing a belt that is being damaged).

To post a video, you need to upload it to your YouTube account first and then use the lvideo address to link to it using the YouTube tags in the editor.

dw10, how much does the bottom crank pulley outer wobble, made to wobble (NOT when the engine is running, fingers and hands cost millions !!!! ) and how does the rubber looks??

Does the engine make a horrible sounding noise when cold, which goes away a little when warm? This noise comes from the crank pulley area. How are the other parts, to idler and tensioner roller, alternator and power steering and air con, play in bearings??

Can you see the belt flapping about??

This is the aux drive belt that drives the aircon, alternator, powersteering, idler and adust pulleys, not the cam belt. The cam belt lives behind the crank bottom pulley and behind the cam belt cover which is plastic. On 306's, if the aux drive belt goes, it can take out the cam belt!!!!!

got it now, its an outy not an inny.......

when was the cam belt last replaced by the way.

the cam belt in the upper picture is in need of immediate ( that's immediate ) replacement. if the cam belt goes its a real real real disaster, at least broken rocker arms.......but possible scrap engine.

Picture of pully is crank aux belt pully sprayed a bit of wd40 on it and noise went away so i removed aux belt completely and noise went away completely and sounded as it did before noise and as soon as i put the belt back on the noise was very faint but as soon as i give it a bit off revs the noise can back, as said not sure when timing belt was changed but im going to change it once i sort this noise out and can i take it the pully has gone and needs replaced

Yep, that crank pulley is toast! On this engine you should really pin the crank shaft before you try and undo the bolt, as the cam belt sprocket is floating behind (they did away with the vernier cam pulley used on earlier engines). If you want to keep it, then I would change the whole timing belt kit and the water pump and crank pulley.
