Hi all. I have a relative who owns a 2001 (Y reg) Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDi.
A slight fuel leak occurred on the fuel return cooler and was driven around while leaking fuel. This was a very small leak but the car stopped working. We replaced the part but couldn't get it to run after that. Not sure if this was related to the fuel leak or what but we replaced the fuel pump relay as we didn't hear the pump running. Still nothing
The car runs on easy start but it seems that there is no fuel being pumped to the injectors. This is leading me to believe that the pump and/or ECU is responsible.
Also the relay makes a buzzing sound constantly. Occasionally when the ignition is off it buzzes for a few seconds.
Any help or advice will be much appreciated. Thanks
Jake.

If it's a Bosch injection system then it will have a lift pump in the tank - these are well known for giving trouble. If you can't hear it hum at key on, then this is why it won't run. Unfortunately on a Xsara Pic it's a tank out job to replace it! It should be possible to check somewhere that it is getting powered up, but ultimately without access to the top of the tank you won't know for sure. If you can post the VIN (which will be hidden) we can check if it is indeed a Bosch system.

Thanks for the fast reply. Unfortunately the vehicle is not at my address so I can't give the vin number yet but dropping the tank shouldn't be a problem as we have the appropriate ramps tools etc.
Just gotta tow it to the unit. But thanks for that I'll check it soon.
Also if it is the pump, what price would I be looking at? Thanks.

If you can smack the tank bottom with a bit of 3x2 it will sometimes revive the pump for a while.

Sounds like a plan, guess I've got nothing to lose, may be a temp fix just to see if we can get it going again.. Then I'll know if it is the pump.
Thank you for the advice.

Found the problem. Broken fuel pump wires.

Well found. Presumably you had to take a chance and drop the tank to find that.

Surprisingly enough, this was on the bottom of the tank. I was lucky to have found that. Still won't start though, think that a combination of air in the system and a weak battery is the cause now.

Just unscrew the fuel pump plug and give it a good clean. Theese oldies were really premium but not everlasting.
