Hi,
Was driving to work tonight and when I approach traffic lights, I pressed the brakes and... nothing. Foot straight into the board
Tried pumping the brakes to no avail - they would not catch.
Managed to crawl into work and took a look underneath. P/S rear has lost the pads and fluid is pissing out of the piston from where I tried pumping them to get them to bind.
Just wondering what could be the cause of this? I'm guessing that the pad carrier is shot. This is the second time this happened recently - first time the mechanic replaced the pads, slides and the metal tag and said all was good. I'm not doubting that he installed the pads correctly.
The pad carrier is original - is it possible that it has corroded/worn to the extend that it would throw the pads?
No brakes - lost brake pad!

Re: No brakes - lost brake pad!
There is a brake disc pad fitting kit - that contains the clips and other parts - so I suspect this should be replaced pretty frequently (part 11 on the diagram) Part Number 442755.

I've never heard of this happening before. Should I be looking to replace the carrier too?
I suspect that now the fluid is leaking a new caliper will be required, Marc's fitting kit and pads.

Re: No brakes - lost brake pad!
Thanks, mechanic ordering carrier, caliper, pads, and fitting kit for both rear corners.
Hopefully, be back on the road soon. No fun coming off a downhill dual carriageway into traffic lights with no brakes!!!

Ok, also check the disc thickness and that it's running true and central in the carrier with no excessive play in the bearing.
You need to establish where the clearance is coming from that allows the pad to pass through, or it could happen again, despite your new parts.
The caliper is probably salvageable, but if the budget is there, a new one is nice.
Finally, check you have the right parts. Could you have a carrier that's meant for vented discs, but you have solids? Wouldn't be the first time...

Carrier is original - 18 years old! I don't ever recollect there being vented discs on this car, so that is part of the setup is okay.

Re: No brakes - lost brake pad!
Any rough idea how much a mechanic would charge to replace the rear caliper?
I've got the disc, pads, caliper, carrier & fitting kit.
I am tempted to pay for delivery home and I'd make the change myself this time - been quoted £170 due to the milage.

Depending on model, I'm seeing 2.60 - 3.60 book time so that quote seems reasonable.
