Due for a change ??????

Post by renagade »

Hi ,its that time of year again. The c5 has 86k on the clock now and since spending 2k on the gear box last year has not put a foot wrong , but the clutch has started to slip now and again. I can drive for a week and no problem then it starts to get over come by my heavy left foot.

So I have been looking at a low milage c4 picasso with the egs box. You may all say HO NO not an egs but when set up right they are great. ( many years ago I had a ds with the hydraulic gear change and again it took some setting up but when done right it was a dream to drive but alas the rust got to it and I had to part with it.

So folks, Any do's or don'ts with the c4 Picasso. 2010 - 2014 model year diesel egs6 .

I would change the clutch on the C5. A car with that low a mileage is worth keeping.

Get the cheque book ready...

But honestly, unless you positively must have one, I would go for a fully automatic version.

It’ll probably be clutch and DMF and then the setting up of the EGS system, big bucks.

Possible mis-interpretation. I was suggesting he keeps his C5 and fix the clutch on it, rather than get a Picasso with the EGS 'box.

Yes, but James he already has the EGS system on his C5 - it’s an X7 with Stop Start.

Ah, OK.

I would still get the clutch done (OK, with all of the extras involved), as you already know the car, and what has been done to it. Any replacement car is going to be a bit of a lottery.

If I understand this correctly, the OP has an X7 with an EGS 'box with a clutch that's started slipping ? Are these the same clutch set-ups as the conventional 6 speed 'box ? If so, they have an auto-adjusting clutch with can be a bit reluctant to adjust at times. Mine does it - a bit of clutch abuse normally resets it so it doesn't slip.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Worth a shot.

The trouble with the STT piloted system on the X7 is having to remove the gearbox part and then the hydraulics for the actuators - it's a bit involved, suffice it to say I would run a mile.

Oh, that speaks volumes!
I've read a bit about them, but never seen one in the flesh.
If they're tricky enough to scare our resident expert, then I'll be referring them elsewhere, when one finally appears at my door!

You've just saved yourself a world of pain.

Chefslot has just removed all the gubbins on a Picasso to get the clutch changed and to sort out a hydraulic leak from the actuator over a period of a few weeks IIRC:

And further video for gearbox:

I have been quoted £1460.00 for a new clutch, dmf and release bearing. Total job would be 3 day,s at Citroen Doncaster. Only last year I had the valve block replaced at the said garage cost me the best part of £2000.00. The car is an 11 plate c5 x7 1.6 e hdi with 86000 miles on the clock. During it having the gearbox sorted last year Citroen did fit a new water pump and timing belt and pulleys as a recall from Citroen.
I was just looking at a 2012 c4 picasso exclusive with 44k on the clock the the egs box and thought for £3500 to replace the c5 or put another £1460.00 into the car ??????????

That is a dilemma - but I personally would bypass the C4 EGS and for £1.5k tops for the clutch and DMF - you should be good for a while longer - is that the original clutch and DMF?

I'm on my second DMF and third clutch at 7k manual box. The third replacement was due to crank case oil seal leak which contaminated the newly replaced clutch, so to be fair second clutch.

With another vehicle, you could end up with a whole new pandora's box to open. What's to say that the C4 clutch and DMF will also be on the way out?

If you really do want to change it I would stick with a fully auto box if you must have an autopilot :-D
