DRL's

Post by KennyW »

Hello All,

Happy new year to all, now to the problem/ issue.

Just changed the DRL's on my C5 x7 checked they were working and refitted bumper( Make: Lumro)

Next day nearside not working, before I had to remove bumper again enough room for my hand to reach bulb holder and moved it slighty bingo working again. I did notice it would turn and bulb would go off and on depending how far it was moved.

Did an oil change moved vehicle both working still, when I moved it back offside not working tried to do same as before but no success.

My thoughts are the fit my not be as tight and the connection is not be made very well.

Thoughts please.

AS I'm sure you know Kenny, these HP24Ws have a quarter of a turn lock, which is what makes the little sods so hard to get out in the first place, along with the tight seal.

So as far as the replacement is concerned, have you bought a complete unit with the holder, or just the bulb and separated it out (even though officially they say it cannot be done)?

I ask because when I upgraded mine with high powered LEDs, I had to modify the base holder to incorporate the LED bulb and ensure it was a tight fit in the holder.

If you have not bought an official bulb or bulb and bulb holder unit, the contacts may not be as per the original giving the intermittent issue, or as said previously, it must be locked for that quarter of a turn to engage the contacts.

Thanks for the reply Marc,

I have separated the broken bulbs from theirr holders. I inserted the led lights into these holders as a set of spares.

I fitted the lumor replacement units, bulb and holder. They were given a 1/4 turn when fitted.

How did you fit the LED bulbs into the holder?

Once I removed the bulb carefully from the plastic collar tags, I had to manually grind down the plastic vertical pieces that support the bulb a little at a time until I got a nice tight fit. I used a scalpel type blade to be able to trim thin layers off.

It meant carefully sinking the 2 long wires of the led into the holes of the holder, but not pushing too hard as the pins are slightly narrower than the holes. So it was a balancing act to get the pins in and the bulb wedged in nice and tight so that it wouldn’t move or come out with the car movement.

I must of done a decent job as they are still working 😁

Just moving off topic slightly - I've spent two afternoons trying to change one of my DRL's. Not by removing the bumper, but by groping under the headlamp with a 40T torxs. I couldn't understand why the 40T wouldn't turn it. Eventually, I got it out and the replacement refitted.

Melt down interesting John, when I removed mine there was nothing like that.

I've tried inserting my hand but could not get sufficient access big hands. Hence removing bumper which is not as hard as it seems.

Will report back tomorrow.

So the OEM bulb had blown Kenny - but the LEDs are ok?

Where did you get the HP21W bulb from as they are £50 each from the dealer inc. VAT of course :rofl2:

Yes Marc, LED's fine Cree make, the bulb was Lumor make.

Is there a plastic type filler which could be 'poured' into the holders to secure LED'S.

I believe some have used some sort of compound to do this, like the so called ‘Gorilla Snot’, that creamy substance that is found on circuit boards to hold larger components in place.

Any non-conductive fixing glue should be fine, there are a few epoxy resin type products that would probably do Kenny.

Thanks for the reply Marc,

LED's still working and I have to drive on a farm road to reach the cottage so they must be reasonably secure.

As a result of finishing this I put her in for the yearly health and safety check, new MOT issued with 3 advisories which are to be sorted in better weather.

Been looking into various sealants etc .
I've got high temp RTV sealant in my shed maybe this could work!
Thoughts please.
