Diesel leak, C5 hdi

Unread post by numnuts »

Hi guys,
I just noticed that after putting £30 of fuel in my 2003 C5 HDI, that the gauge was registering almost empty the day after. I just put another tenner in and spotted a dripping leak from the mud flap behind the rear drivers wheel. It is definitely diesel. Any thoughts? Thanks. T

Just one initially - Don't Smoke! :-D

Pop your VIN up and I'll have a look at the fuel lines for your model.

Smoke away, it's diesel :D

There's a spillage drain around the filler neck that exits at the wheel arch. I used to spill veg oil all the time refilling the xantia and would later have to mop it off my rear wheel. How much had you noticed leaked?
Why the gauge reads empty after £30 of fuel I can't imagine unless it was completely empty and you got ripped off at the pump as it should be well over 1/4. You'd know if that much had leaked out anywhere as it would stink and cause a right mess wherever you parked.

Ok, so here are the diagrams of the fuel supply and return pipes and of the tank area.

Hopefully that will help you identify the area of the leak.

Ok, for the second diagram:
1: Duel Feed Line
4: Fuel Pipe
5: Fuel Feed Pipe
9: Fuel Cooler
10: Fuel Return Pipe
11: Fuel Feed Pipe
12: Fuel Feed Pipe

So the part at the back right of the diagram is the fuel tank

Thanks Marc. Unfortunately I can't make much sense of those diagrams without a key that corresponds to the numbers. Will keep trying though. Thanks for your time.

Just out of interest, Marc, there is a part on that diag that's new to me: #9, Fuel Cooler.
Is that in the supply or return pipe?
Why is it needed? I thought diesel often needed warming, rather than cooling.
Where exactly is it mounted?

In some models theer is both a heater and cooler.
Cooler more for hotter climates.

I've added a legend to the second diagram.
