'99 1.9 DW8 Dispatch - I found out my dash is newer than the van, so has been replaced. Can I find my real mileage?

Unread post by kenbw2 »

Had my dash out the other day and saw a sticker saying "10/07/01". Considering my van is a T reg, I have a sneaking suspicion it's not original. This means the 170k miles it displays is likely not accurate at all

Mine's a non-ECU DW8 (not the ECUd DW8B). I assume the original mileage disappeared with the original dash?

Given it's a 99 plate, the dash is dated 2001 and there would be no MOT until it was 3 years old it was probably replaced before the first MOT. Maybe Citroen have a service record but after all these years I wouldn't have much hope.

Is it possible they set the odometer to match the old one? Anyone know what the procedure was for replacing one at the time? Shouldn't it be recorded on the log book or something?

The mileage is stored both the BSI and the instrument panel. When you fit a replacement BSI or instrument panel (new or used), the mileage in both the panel and the BSI will be set to the higher of the existing values.

Normally that would be right, but looking at Ken's specs, there is no BSI shown as we know it for this year. Only the Central locking ECU. This vehicle has a build date of March 1999. According to my information the electronic instrument panel didn't come in until 2000 year range (with build date from May 1999), so wouldn't be available until slightly later.

The fact that the dash says it was from 2001 doesn't mean it was changed in 2001, it's probably just out of a scrapper.

I can see on the MOT history that it changed significantly

2013: 140k miles
2014: 143k miles
2015: 115k miles <-- sudden drop
2016: 116k miles
2017, 2018: Unreadable <-- one of the digits has died

Looks like I can add 27-30k miles to my mileage.

Not too bad then, at least the DVLA site came though - i have used it many times to check mileage history on vehicles IMO it is a great idea

Check the MOT history of LC58 ZDE my recently sold Grand Picasso.

It's been cleverly clocked. It had 124k on it when I sold it a month ago
.. Now on 113k for it's last MOT. Looks like they've changed it to just make it look like it's done 2k since the previous MOT..
