aux drive belt auto adjuster

Post by picassodad »

03 plate 1.8 litre dohc ( EW7J4 6FZ ) 1749cc petrol 1.8 dohc petrol em engine 03 plate?? still not memorised model etc for this car.....it has aux drive belt auto adjust and cam belt auto adjust

Can the aux drive belt auto adjuster be replaced with the engine in situ please ?

The "arm" with the pulley attached seems very "wobbly"...........its sprung loaded but the pivot for the arm may be worn or the torques bolt that form the pivot may be loose ??

Getting the upper cam belt cover is such a bind, i need much thinner hands.....

Also anyone seen these with an oil leak by the oil filter, its not coming from the oil pressure switch, but seems to be coming from higher up than the oil filter.....cam boxes seem ok and the cam oil seals etc are a bit too far from the leak.

Will be changing the oil and filter very soon as it needs an oil change and the bottom of the filter is a little "rusty" so may even be leaking/weeping from there....

God those lower upper cam belt cover reccessed allan bolts are a real sod to get to.

Have researched a worm drive low profile tool, but space is real limited.

Even the metal a/c pipes are in the way ffs. would be better if they had a rubber section so they could be moved easily out of the way.

real creative technology.

I think we've asked for your VIN before if you want more detailed info (or Reg).

Ok i dont have that info to hand but finally got the top cover off. I intend making a template for the inner win to "locate" it via some existing holes and mark where a hole can be drilled in the inner wing to allow access to the really difficult bottom rear allan bolt in the top cam cover from under the wheel arch area. A long allan key could then be used to undo/do up this little blighter.

The small oil leak seems to ber coming from the top of the oil filter, with some staining of oil on the upper engine and running down, as it seems previous owners have managed to pour oil over the engine rather than in it.

It all looks good under the cam belt cover with a unipart belt, that info still just visible and evidence of the original belt being replaced.

I bet Citroen techs/mechs would use this info, probably released from HQ, unless they use a worm drive or similar tool ?

They use specific tools for sure - but if you want the procedure I'll need the VIN or the Reg

Gosh this place is busy, cant seem to find my thread on timing belt cover.....

Anyways the lad got all the awkward upper cam belt covers in no problems at all, that's where small hands come in !

If the sponge protector on the large bore a/c pipe is slid out of the way and small rachets etc. are used, there is just room to place the rachet in the chassis rail "gap". I will make an other small 1/4 drive socket allan key of just the right length to reach the lower rear allan bolt in the upper cam belt cover, so I can undo and do up this awkward bolt.

I still intend making a cardboard reference bit so as the drill a small hole in the inner wing and gain easy access to this bolt at a later date as the lad is using the car again, its his holiday period this week and back to work next week....

Ok, so I'm not sure what you are really asking, so here is the accessories drive belt removal and refitting info as I think this is relevant to what you want:

Both the timing belt and the ancillary belt are tensioned by a Dynamic Roller Tensioner.

Ancillary Drive Belt - Removing
Picassodad D.PNG
Picassodad E.PNG
Lift and support the vehicle with the wheels free.
Remove:
  • The front right wheel
  • The plastic pegs (1), using the tool [1]
  • The splash shield (2)
Loosen the belt (5), rotate the tensioning roller (3) using the bolt (4) in an anti-clockwise direction.
Note: The bolt (4) has a left hand thread.
Vehicle with Air Conditioning

Compress the tensioning roller (3).
Remove the ancillary belt (5)

Essential: Check that the rollers (6) and (7) rotate freely (no play and no stiffness).

Refitting
  • Compress the tensioning roller (3).
  • Fit the accessories belt (5).
Essential: Check that the belt is correctly fitted in the grooves of the different pulleys.
Refit:
  • The splash shield (2)
  • The plastic pins (1)
  • The front right wheel
  • Return the vehicle to its wheels.

Thanks thanks thanks for that, very useful, left hand thread eh !

The aux drive belt tensioner is the unit 3 and 6 in the last diagram, is this tensioner unit removable with the engine in situ please ?

The reason being it seems to be a bit "wobbly" on the lads car, the sprung loaded arm pivot may be badly worn, or the pivot arm bolt may be loose ??

Anyone had problems with these please ?

This is what I have from the BOL, but there is NOTHING mentioned about removing the tensioner pulley itself.

A single, multi-ribbed auxiliary drivebelt is used on all models. The belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor according to equipment fitted. On 1.6 litre engines without air conditioning, the belt is adjusted manually, whereas on all other engines, adjustment is by means of an automatic spring-loaded tensioning mechanism.

1.8 litre engines

From under the wheelarch, rotate the tensioner pulley anti-clockwise, against spring tension, using a spanner on the tensioner pulley retaining bolt.
Xsara Picasso Tensioner B.png
Hold the tensioner pulley in this position and slip the belt off the pulleys (see illustration). Release the tensioner pulley and remove the belt from the engine.

If the belt is being renewed, ensure that the correct type is used. Fit the belt around all the pulleys, except the tensioner pulley, ensuring that the ribs on the belt are correctly engaged with the pulley grooves, and that the drivebelt is correctly routed (see illustrations).
