Engine cooling fans not working, Xantia TD '96

Unread post by vmaxvmax »

Hi,

The cooling system failed the other day and the engine overheated...

The car has aircon - but that only worked effectively above around 1.2 - 1.5k rpm (probably needing a recharge and unrelated to the engine cooling fans?).

Neither of the fans operate at slow or fast speed now. The fuses are all OK in the cabin and in the engine bay. If I remove the brown connector on the thermostat - still no fans...

The fans turn easily if I rotate them with a long screwdriver through the grill - indicating that they are not seized.

Relays?

Anyone any ideas?

Thank you in advance...

Yes, pulling the brown sensor connector should bring on the fans (at fast speed), as should turning on AC (at slow speed).

Three relays at the front, which work in combination to produce the slow and fast fan speeds. Take each relay out and clean up the external blade contacts and the sockets (as best you can). There are also two 'maxi' fuses down front, dedicated to the fans (30A/40A apiece iirc).

The relays are standard 30/40A 12v automotive 'cube' type, 5-pin, SPCO (1 set of changeover contacts), and so can be replaced if faulty. They can be individually checked on the bench.

Thank you White exec!

The max fuses are fine. The relays are next on my list... Would be better than worn out fan motors.

Fingers crossed.
