Enabling tailgate opening on key?

Post by Dane »

Hello good citronists,

I've recently bought a nice C5 Crosstourer 2.2Hdi. Very fine car. It has the motorised tailgate as did my previous X7. The middle button on the keys does not activate the tailgate like it did on my previous car. The key has the symbol, but nothing happens when I press it. Can someone tell my how I activate the function on the key?

What model is your X7 (trim level)? The electric tailgate was only available on the Exclusive trim.

@Givemeabreak It's an Exclusive. As was my former C5 and with that one it worked. The tailgate functions the way it is supposed to when activated by the button on the tailgate.

I have come across an option in the BSI settings to choose whether the third (middle) button on the key is used to turn on the headlights or to release the boot latch. Is this what you are referring to?

I can't think what reason anyone would have to deactivate it as it is set by default to do that - the saloons the middle button activates the guide me home headlamps.

So either it has been deactivated as a function in Diagbox on purpose, or there is a malfunction. So it won't open using the key fob, but when it has been opened manually, are you saying that is closes when you press the button the tailgate?

Does the key fob look original - as if it has been replaced with an aftermarket copy then the circuitry may not be compatible and therefore may not be sending the correct data signal for the middle function to work.

Thanks for taking the time to answer =)

The tailgate does what it's supposed to. It opens and closes by pressing either the outside button or the inside red button for closure. The keys looks exactly lige the keys I had for my former C5, I bought the car at a Citroen dealership (800k away, so not swinging by there any time soon :-D )

Monday I'll swing by the local Citroën shop and ask them.

Do you have the second key fob (2 fobs were supplied as standard)? If it does the same with the second one, then it could be the function has been deactivated as the likelihood of 2 fobs being aftermarket is unlikely but not impossible - unless the last owner was a bit of a loser! :-D

I have both keys, they look fine and Citroëny ;)
The previous owner was a German company that bought it from the same dealership I bought it from. I am the second owner, so I guess the possibility of the keys being anything but the originals is slim

Ok, can you tell me if there are any beeps emitted when trying to open the tailgate at all?

You can try reprogramming the user - defined opening angle to see it that has been changed:
  • Operate the closing of the tailgate procedure using either of the tailgate buttons to start the closing.
  • When at the desired angle, stop the closing / opening by pressing one of the tailgate buttons ONCE
  • Then without moving the tailgate angle, hold down one of the tailgate buttons for 3 seconds.
This programmes the desired opening angle in.

Try that and see if it makes any difference.

No beeps when button on key is pressed. The usual beeps when either buttons on the tailgate is pressed. I’ll try the angle calibration 👍🏻

Finally! It comes down to user error 🤪
It requires a long press of the button on the key. The tailgate on my former C5 was opened via a normal button push.

Thank you for suggestions 👍🏻

That was EXACTLY the experience with my new-to-me X7 a few years ago. I complained about it to the dealer and it was only when they saw me only give a short press of the button that they pointed out my error.

So, don't feel bad about it. I reckon that it is faulty logic from whomever programmed up the tailgate opening parameters.

You can choose between long and short button press in the Diagbox.
