Xantia aerial

Post by wotsupnow »

Anyone know how to get to it ? Haynes says removing the headlining is a specialist job and doesn't give any clues whatsoever.
I toyed with cutting the lining either side of the aerial to make a flap.
The aerial gives extremely poor reception, I suppose I could use an inside aerial instead if they still do 'em eg tax disk holder or strip across top of screen.

Pete -
Honestly - instead of ruining the headlining first off - then try the radio end of the aerial cable. Commonly the inner wire in the coax is broken off - exactly in the connector.
These in-car coax cables leaves much to wish for quality - chances are you loose temper while trying to repair [:(!]

I too thought the reception was poor, so on the removable mast,I carefully slit along the plastic moulding about 2 inches from the mast part to reveal the internals. Removed the fibre glass rod aerial, and replaced with a longer piece of stainless steel from another old aerial, crimped it back in, then glued along the cut with super glue. Where the new mast joined the repaired moulding, I squeezed some silicon to prevent water ingess. The reception with this longer mast is much better, and does not frequency swap half as much.

I agree, takes the radio out carefuly and you will probably find the centre pin of the antenna cable plug stuck in the socket. Unfortunately they used eihter MAG or Facon antennas which for a periof ued an inferior plug design on the cable end wherein the centre pin was a force fit through an insulating disc hopefully making contact wiht the centre core of the cable.
You have to re assemble it making sure that you have good contact. Check the resistance from your new steel mast (of which more below) and the pin. it should be almost zero. (maybe 1 or 2 ohms only)
Also chech the resistance between the centre core and the outter, this sould be very high. The resistance between the outer and the vehicle bare metal chassis should be less than 1 ohm.
If your plug is in fact ok, you need to check the cable is not crushed or kinked along it's length (imposible I know but it will affect the performance.
The lenght of your mast should in theory be around 0.94m for FM reception in the UK; but half the length should be better than 3/4 of the length. (the lenght includes the metal parts of the antenna base above the roof) Having spent most of my life in car audio I know that the theory does not always work.
The antanna should always be tilted between vertical and 45º, lower and it becomes directional.

There is a longer aerial than the standard short one available from Citroen that greatly improved reception on my Xantia. It cost about £8 I think. if you have the aerial too vertical though (higher than about 35 degrees) it tends to make a whistling wind noise above 60 mph.

Haynes talk a load of s***e , it took me less than 15 mins to change mine , just remove the panel in the roof lining where the remote locking sensor sits you can then just about see the back of the nut that holds the ariel on I then removed the inner plastic clips that the sun visors sit in and gently pulled down the headlining just enough to get at the nut .
the ariel coax slides over a bolt on the end of the ariel mast and the nut holds it in place .undo bolt sling old mast and replace with new.If in doubt go to your local breakers and practice on one of theirs[:D]
