Handbrake binding...

...on my Xantia 1.9D. Ive had a look at the caliper end and tried manually to free off the crank that operates the handbrake by working it to & fro. But not much success - anyone offer any advice about how to cure this problem?

Are your cables free when you disconnect them from the caliper?

Good point, arry b - havent managed to check cables yet. I take it that if they are the cause the only cure is replacement? Thanks again for the suggestion.

My Dad had a similar problem with his Xantia at last MOT - there is a some sort of return spring behind the rubber cover on the back of the caliper. On his car the water had got in and corroded it away. He got an overhaul kit from Citroen for about £30, and was charged about the same to fit it.

The cables are fine so I guess the problem is in the caliper/s. Richard w, thats useful info about a kit - but I want to do this job myself. How do I get going with a DIY approach?

YES - I know - all about BX - but same construction on the Xantia with slightly different dimensions here & there.
Recommand you find a breaker's unit (set) and start there.
