Re: Black Smoke Under Power
Hi and Welcome.
Do you have your VIN handy (post or PM it) so I can tell what you do and don't have as there are quite a few variants.
From Euro 5 standards in 2009, it became a legal requirement for all new diesel vehicles to have a diesel particulate filter fitted. If your van is one of these, then there shouldn't be any smoke to be honest. You may have a van that was on the border of the regulations, so may not have one.
If it does have a DPF, then it is possible that it may have been removed by the previous owner, given the mileage, as that is certainly over the mileage for a replacement. We'll know for sure whether it does or doesn't once we check your VIN.

Re: Black Smoke Under Power
Ok so you have the DISPATCH III LONG GLAZED VAN H1 TYPE 10 2.0 HDi 120 with the DW10UTED4 engine and Manual gearbox 6-Speed gearbox.
There is NO Diesel Particulate Filter on this variant according to your VIN, although some versions do have one. So that eliminates a clogged DPF.
Black smoke generally indicates over-fuelling. This may be because your turbo piping is clogged up with carbon or oil, or the EGR valve may be stuck in one position as 2 possible causes leading to lack of air causing the over-fuelling. Try checking for kinks, leaks or blocked pipes, but you really need to get it on a Lexia to see if there is any associated fault codes that can point to the suspect. If the Turbo vanes or the EGR valve are sticking, you should get some indication from the diagnostic.

Yep, over-fuelling as Marc says.
Do you get a louder turbo whistling noise these days? If so this does point to a boost leak.
If that's the case, then they're more of a PITA to track down than on an n/a car;
n/a car has vacuum in the intake system so easy to spray carb cleaner everywhere on the intake system on an n/a car to track down the leak, whereas a turbo car has pressure intake system so it wants to push air out rather than suck in.
The way to do it is to mix up a soap/detergent solution in a spray can, get someone to rev up the engine so it's on decent boost and hold it there and then spray the detergent mix over the intake system and see if you get bubbles forming anywhere.

Re: Black Smoke Under Power
Hi I beleave it has DPF has there is a box part way down that has lots of wires
I have only had it on bluetooth computer at min but no codes were present
There doesnt appear to be any hissing or turbo dump sounds at min
A point I forgot to mention yesterday is when the air flow is disconnected there is reduced but not completely gone smoke
Thanks
Paul

Re: Black Smoke Under Power
No DPF - confirmed from your VIN (see extract below). The DPF is contained within the exhaust system below the catalytic converter section - it does not have any wiring. You are probably looking at the engine ECU or one of the other electro valves / connectors.

Re: Black Smoke Under Power
If there are no error codes, then the boost pressure must be within tolerances. I:t might be worth checking out the condition of the Doser valve (no.7 in that pic above).
I seem to remember from a 407 forum that the spring return on them can fail leaving it flapping in the breeze and potentially restricting airflow.
Whilst the Doser is off you could peer into the inlet manifold and assess the level of EGR crap that has accumulated over the years. I doubt if that would help restriction wise

Re: Black Smoke Under Power
Sorry it’s been a while
So just an update there appears to be no leaks to the pipes I have had the injectors tested by an engineer and all 4 have faults so replacements have been ordered let’s hope this is a cure so I can carry on this project
