C3 1.1 Finding a 'Clonk'

Post by Pug_XUD_KeenAmateur »

Daughter's incapacitated at the moment so plan to 'swap' her car for mine tomorrow.
Its got a 'clonk' which I'm struggling to find

It started off when taking up drive, particularly in Reverse. After a good root around the Suspension mountings, finding no play in any of them, my attention turned to the OS Engine Mount which had excessive play in it (since replaced)

....but the noise persists and has worsened so that now it does it in any gear with no need for encouragement from (eg) raising the clutch harshly.

Secondary suspect is the Driveshaft, but that'd make a noise on 'lock' wouldn't it, if it were knackered?

My fault finding is hampered by having no proper assistant or hydraulic lift to viewing the action of the engine / suspension while provoking the clonk, so if anyone's got any suggestions for assisting to find the cause I'd be glad to hear them.

Its a 2005 C3 1.1 Petrol with 120k on it.

Thanks Guys!

Does it do it while driving (bumps/steering left/right) or only when taking up drive?

Have you checked all the exhaust (manifold, cat and downpipes) bolts/nuts are secure and no heat shields loose?
Is the downpipe to gearbox securing bolt installed or is that missing?
Subframe and steering rack fixings all secure?

Thanks Iain, this one turned out nice n simple, bottom engine mount.

...breathes a sigh of relief not to have to disconnect the Battery on a modern. :-D
