LHM leakage on Xantia 2001

Post by atr »

Hi
I've noticed today quite a substanial leak of LHM puddle in frond of the driver seat on my Xantia (please be aware that it is a left hand drive). as far as I can tell - it's coming from the hole of the brake pedal push rod. I will appreciate any info/advice what to do.
Thanx.

It is almost certainly the rubber cap on the brake valve. The part is not expensive, but the brake valve must be (partly) removed to fit it, which I think needs removal of the lhm tank must be removed on a lhd car.

You need to replace the seal and clip on the end of the brake valve. Items 5 and 6 in this diagram:

On a LHD you probably need to remove the LHM tank, and then you can unbolt the valve, and there should be enough give in the pipes to ease it back from the bulkhead and get enough room to change the old seal. However, I get an error when trying to view the prices for those parts.... :?

Thanx for the replies and forgive my ignorance since I (as you would guess) never done it before. I take it that the system has to be depressurized first.

You do not need to apologise for your ignorance (although it is appreciated). One of the main reasons this forum exists is to provide information to those that require it.

Thanx again.
Do you know a supplier that will ship to Israel?
btw - the system must be depressurized?, if so, it's done by unscrewing a bolt on the regulator?

It is very simple to de-pressurise the system. Bottom out the car, and then look for a hex bolt on the front of the regulator that is standing a bit proud of the regulator. Assuming you have found the right one undo it by ONE TURN ONLY (if you take the bolt out a small sealing ball bearing will come out!). There is usually a gentle noise (IIRC a gentle whistle) until the system has fully de-pressurised.

When I had a BX, and, later, Xantias, if I had to de-pressurise the system I would (once the work was done and everything was secure) start the engine and leave it running for a couple of minutes before tightening up the pressure release bolt again. That way I felt that the LHM had managed to circulate and drive out any air trapped in the system.

Two more pieces of information:

The same parts were also used on the XM, CX, SM and some DS, so are available from classic spares suppliers that deal in those models.

Also note that the LHM will have soaked into the foam under the carpet, and cleaning that will probably be more work than fixing the leaking valve.

Hi
I've managed to remove the control unit from the vehicle in order to replace the brake control unit protector and the brake control unit ring (items #6 and #5 on the drawing provided by RichardW) but as far as I can tell there are some variations from the drawing and I would like to hear your opinion before I cause any damage. on the drawing, there is a circlip (no 70 ) that secures the spring and the protector. in my unit there is no circlip, only some sort of "O" ring located in the groove. one more different - in my unit, the ring (item #5) doesn't exists. is it possible that somewhere along the way it was dismantled and "improvised"? or is it possible that there is more that one version of the unit?
I've attached a picture of the unit.
Looking forward for your comments.
Thanx.

The "o-ring" is actually part of the rubber cap. It might be clearer if you watch this video. The techical quality is poor, but at about 3 minutes in, you can see how the rubber cap and ring go together.

Xantia V6
Thanx! that was awesome! in about 2 minutes I managed to remove the protector (the cap). next step - to replace it.
2 rubber hoses, one of them is the hose that is connected to the brake control unit (I suppose that is the hose that supplies the LHM to the unit, please correct me if I'm wrong) are torn, which is no wonder considering their age and the environment they are located in. I'm considering to fix it by inserting a short metal tube to connect the hoses and hose clamps to tighten them, or is there a better way (besides replacing the whole "octopus"?
