What is my 1991 205 GT worth?

Post by itsjonesyy »

Im in need of a valuation for my car if anyone can help, as Im about to take out a new insurance policy and want to get it right. Id rather not go out and get it professionaly checked so I figured that online is the next best thing,

What is my car worth?
https://imgur.com/a/3lOSDWO

Car is a 1991 205 GT, 1360cc, done 48000miles. Full service history and 2 owners prior to myself.

Some scuffs on the interior and slightly faded plastic in external areas, side bolster worn on driver side. Bodywork is in great nick and no paint fade, original paint. There is some some dings on the front wing and the lower door which are visible in certain lights, so it isnt perfect. no rust, likewise for the exhaust. Surface underneath the bonnet is showing signs of rust however, would need to be grit blasted to get it in mint condition.

Any help is appreicated!

As a fellow 205 owner I wouldnt really be sure. The values of all 3 door ones are on the way up, and generally I would think 3 doors worth more than their equivelent 5 doors. There are some vadtly overpriced ones for sale! I woult think a good car like yours, even though its 5 door its still a desireable car, should get 2 grand. I dont think I would sell mine for less than 2 grand, its a 3 door, but an auto which would devalue it a bit again. But Im just really guessing. Have you looked at the 205 owners club on facebook. There are actually two groups, but most folk are on both, as I am.

It really has to be down to whether somebody wants one or not. As an example on the Autotrader, there are 5 or 6 listed like yours, ranging in price from:

£5,000 to £20,000 for one with 89k miles!

But you really need to be prepared to wait for the right person to come along who has money to burn or wants it for an investment. But that is a personal thing, as I wouldn’t want one if it was up for £200. So really a specialist thing and I guess it depends on how badly somebody wants to own one.

Best of luck with the sale though👌

For insurance purposes the value has no relationship to what you might value it at or what some keen enthusiast might pay, the insurers will value it as a 1991 banger when it comes to a claim, unless you go to a specialist classic car insurer that accepts it at a 'special value' car.

A mint 3 door gti maybe worth 5k but the ops car is a 5 door 1.4 gt which is the equivalent of a 3 door 1.4 xs. Gti values are through the roof and the ops car probably about 1/2 the value of a gti. If he is wanting to value if for an agreed value insurance policy my advice is pick the value he would sell it for. My one would just be an old banger if I were to crash it and I would have to accept what they said!

Practical classics guide has a 1.4 XS at £1500 for Condition 1 - so a £2k agreed valuation seems about right.

I have an "Agreed Value" classic car policy with Equity Red Star, are you going for something similar? If so value it at say £10K,even if you value it higher I`m sure they wont refuse it,it looks a really nice example . You will be asked to submit a number of photos, body, interior, engine bay, speedo etc together with a very brief history. With this type of policy you must have another car as a daily driver, you must not use the 205 for business or commuting, other restrictions like where its stored over night, annual mileage etc. I would expect ERS to give you a quote for £200 - £250 for the annual policy. Assuming your a mature driver with a clean licence and the 205 wont be parked in the street in London.

Remember this is for insurance only, not what you may get for it in Auto-trader.Mind you, you will have a nice valuation certificate from ERS with £10K on it,that will help you get a good price if you do sell it. When the insurance company agree to the value of say £10K that`s it. If your 205 is stolen or destroyed they pay out £10K no argument.

I suppose the answer to all this is......The car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. If you can get the insurance company to agree its worth £10K great, but you will only get £10K if its written off. Stick it in Autotrader or what ever you will get guys offering £2K-£3K ,if its in show condition may be £5K. There are less than 100 205GT`s in the UK and half of them are SORNed, so really nice ones are getting rare.
Look at this...http://www.classicandperformancecar.com ... at-auction Even if you had shed loads of cash, would you pay £38K for a 205 !! and if a 205GTI 1FM ever came up for sale it would probably fetch quite a bit more. (only 25 were made).

Spend a bit of time getting your 205 immaculate, look after it,and over the years it will increase in value. The thing is if you enjoy owning it,maintaining it,using it,and intend to keep it indefinitely does it matter what its worth.
