RFK Engine, VVt Problem

Post by smdalan »

My car is C4 VTS RFK Engine 180 BG

I have a problem with my VVT system. car gives an error p0012. I have changed vvt dephaser, selenoid, crank, crank pulley, camshaft sensor, oil and water pump and timing belt. The car cuts out about 4500 rpm. Gives the anti anti pollution information screen and faulty engine management. Service light Come up.

I found in "diagbox" camshaft intake position stuck at -5 degrees, but it must be +5 degrees at 700 rpm idle, no load 3000 rpm +30 degrees. Camshaft sensor read properly and selenoid is working tested (another car same engine).

Could you help me please

Hi and welcome

P0012 - Variable timing solenoid valve: Locked at the lower stop.

Possible causes listed that I've put together from other sources:
  • The variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil control valve (OCV) stuck in the open position.
  • The camshaft phaser is damaged and stuck in the retarded position.
  • Oil flow problems to the VCT piston and phaser.
Symptoms:
  • The ECM will turn on the Check Engine Light if the timing cannot be commanded to move.
  • The engine will have a hard start condition due to the retarded timing position.
  • Fuel mileage may go down since the camshaft is not in a position to get the best possible fuel mileage.
  • Depending on camshaft position the engine may stall, hesitate, and run rougher than normal.
  • The vehicle will fail an emissions test.
Visually check the electrical connections to the camshaft sensor, oil control solenoid valve, and crankshaft sensor for loose connections, damaged wiring harness, or any other issues that may cause a problem.

Possible solutions:
  • Make sure the engine oil is full of clean correct viscosity oil.
  • Reset the fault codes and perform a road test.
  • Change the oil and filter to the proper oil viscosity for the engine's specifications.
  • Repair or replace the wiring or connection to the camshaft oil control solenoid.
  • Replace the camshaft oil control valve for bank 1 intake camshaft.
  • Check the timing chain alignment for jumped timing problems and repair as needed.
One of the causes of this can simply be having the wrong thickness of oil. The camshaft phaser controls the timing advance and retard function through oil pressure and oil. The oil needs to be the proper viscosity for the camshaft timing control to work as designed. If you use too thick of oil it can cause this system to malfunction and cause codes and running issues with the engine. Incorrect oil can cause this code and may cause multiple codes along with it.

What is the VIN of your C4? Post or PM

The oil is ok. I did manage find another chap who had the same code as you but with P1623 (Engine torque delivered: Safety) as Well as P0012.

Unfortunately, he gave up after replacing parts (like you have done) and took it to the main Citroen dealer. The had it for 3 weeks discussing with Citroen France looking at the live data - and in the end it has to have a new ECU!

Yes, I thought so - I checked against another vehicle and it is the same - so check out that link. I do hope it is not the same issue as the ECU was quite costly.

Can you get hold of a used ECU or swap one with someone else to try and see if it's problem?
