Hi all, after some advice from those in the know.
My Xm front caliper is failed the MOT as it's binding slightly. I've been looking for replacements, but noticed that there are quite a few cheaply priced xantia front calipers available.
From the pics they look very similar and I wanted to know if a xantia caliper is the same or will fit my XM. Can somebody who has more experience of both give me the answer please?
thanks in advance

Re: Xantia front caliper on XM
The calipers on the Series 1 and 2 XMs are the same, but they are different part numbers on the Xantia and do look a bit different on the diagrams. Until some of the others members with both can confirm physical differences, a VIN may help to check the correct part for your XM as a starting point.

There were 3 or 4 different types of calliper fitted to the XM and 3 to the Xantia, all differentiated by the disk diameter. You will find that the mounting holes on an XM calliper are threaded, but (I believe) on a Xantia calliper they are clearance drilled, as on an XM the calliper mounts behind the hub carrier and on a Xantia it mounts in front of it.

If you haven't already, try lifting the piston seal with a small screwdriver and squirting some brake fluid in under it, nearly always works for me. I keep a small oil can labelled and containing 'Brake fluid'.

Also try pushing the piston back all the way (with a squirt of lubrication, as per Peter's advice), and bringing it back (with pads in place!) several times, to exercise the piston action.
Pads also need to be free to move laterally; new ones sometimes rather tight, or old ones start binding. File the edges very slightly, if needed.
Also make sure that brake caliper is bled. If there's air in there, it can remain compressed after the brake has been let off, so acts like a spring.
Parking brake acts on the same pads too. Check that (cables) as well, in case it isn't relaxing when off.

Re: Xantia front caliper on XM
I started to do a comparison against the S1 / S2 Xantia & XMs and put these into a table but realised this was going to run to about 3 pages - there are lots of front calipers shared across the platforms with common part numbers, but it would be easier to Get your VIN so we have your RPO, Engine Code, Sal / Est etc. then I could provide you with the part numbers that are compatible from across the models.
