Good evening from a sunny Mullion Cove Cornwall : )
A few weeks ago I posted an audio file of a strange noise from the engine.
The problem looks to have been the camshaft damper pulley, the rubber has separated from its central fixing.
The noise is like a steam engine, the rattle is the cat convertor.
It was intermitent, at other times it squeeked.

Re: Camshaft damper pulley fault
My alternator freewheel went bad and took the dual mass crankshaft pulley with it.

Re: Camshaft damper pulley fault
Good morning Lexi & myglaren
The part was round £40, less that I expected : )
Initially I suspected the cambelt as the noise was there even with the alternator belt off.
I had purchased a full alternator and cambelt kit, but decided to let the local garage fit them.
They did the two for the same price as one after seperate quotes : ).
The car was due a second new cambelt kit at 159000 miles, plus the new alternator belt had split soon after fitting.
The fault showed up when the mechanic tried to insert the locking pin, the flywheel part had turned and was blocking the locating hole.
I have all the old parts, the alternator belt, idler and tensioner pulleys have play in their bearings, not a lot but it is there and the tensioner bearing feels and sounds rough.
All the old cambelt parts look and feel fine so I have put them on eBay : )
Sounds like an expensive repair when your alternator freewheel took the crankshaft pulley out, was there engine damage as well ?
