Citroen C4 VTS loose gear lever

Unread post by Cutac »

Hello

My gear lever can be moved forwards or backwards about 1 cm when in gear.
Look at the video, pay attention from 0:35 to 0:50. Is that normal?

That's fine. It's a lot less movement than my C4 VTS had, that's for sure.

Do you have a habit of holding onto / resting your hand on the gear lever when driving?

When you change gear in a manual car, you’re using the gear lever to move a selector fork which pushes a rotating collar into the gear you’ve selected. If you’re leaving your hand on the gearstick while it is in gear, you could be applying pressure on the selector fork up against the rotating collar and prematurely wearing out this fork.

Seriously? Citroen technician also told me it was fine, but I couldn't believe it

Nope, hand on thigh or steering wheel.
Gearbox was opened 10 thousand kilometers ago(last September) and everything was in mint condition. Only possible cause would be shifter cables.

Yeah, Citroen gear linkages aren't the greatest up to and around that era. My Berlingo, and nearly every other one I've had (Xantia, ZX, XM, Xsara and more) have all had similar or greater amounts of play. It's one of the "features". They all do that sir..
