407 centre console screen.

Post by moizeau »

Here we go then. About a month ago when I bought the car the screen worked fine. It was then parked up outside until I could get over to the UK to fetch it. Straight away the screen wasn't showing all the pixels, since then it seems to be almost perfect on a cold morning then over the next 10 minutes, more and more of the screen disappears until it finally goes black. I've googled it to death and apparently it is a relatively common problem and due to a poor connection between the ribbon connector and the lcd. There is no repair, just replacement! At about 100 squids 2nd hand, that's a 7th of the cars value. I've also noticed that the mileage numbers are showing the same signs but only at the very top of the numbers. Can someone confirm or (hopefully) tell me different please. Thanks

Edit - when the screen goes black with Diagbox connected it says, 'screen not present'

If you are feeling adventurous, you could look at: https://www.sacer-shop.com/car-brand/peugeot.html, either for a whole screen, or just a zebra connector. I don't know of anyone here who has purchased from them, (or even where they ship from), but the pricing looks good.

Thanks, I think I'll pull the unit out next week and see if it reveals anything. The prices are good.

I've pulled the unit out, very easy, took it apart and can't see any way of repairing it. The soldered connections from the screen to the board are very small and I'd guess pretty impossible by hand. Also where the ribbon goes to the screen looks impossible to replicate. I found one at the tat yard but it suffered the same problem. There are many available from citroens but they have a separate AC display, at least on the C2, 3 and 4, so this doesn't show. I wondered if anyone knows of other vehicles that use this screen. It has the dual auto AC. Looks like I'll have to wait for one to turn up at the breakers! Any info very welcome. Thanks

Thanks, watched that the other day, luckily if one does turn up at the tatters I can go with the car and plug it in to test it so it's not a cold postal purchase. It would be interesting to see what other makes / models used the same screen.

Can someone confirm the following please? Reading on the Peugeotforums site, apparently the later black Johnson Controls unit with 12 pins on the other side can be fitted in place of the white Borg unit but it needs re configuring using PP to tell it what the car is equipped with. The ones I tried before would show everything apart from the dual climate. It would appear logical for this to be the case because 1 model would fit all bringing manufacturing costs down. If this is the case there are loads at the local tat yard, all for 15€ each! Does anyone know if this is correct and how it can be done please? Thanks

Basically there were 3 types of screens fitted to the 407. The monochrome or single colour small display, the small colour screen and the larger colour screen. Most of these have been superseded with replacement components during the production run.

The correct screen has to be configured as you say as each were fitted depending on Audio Head unit / vehicle options fitted, as the screen talks directly to the head unit.

Post up or PM your VIN for your 407 and I will be able to determine the right part for you. If the unit is a straight replacement (albeit updated part) it should not need telecoding to the car. You only need to telecode it if you are changing the type of screen from one specific model to another, because of the different function / capability and the BSI needs to know.

Thanks Marc, Mine is the small orange one. As I mentioned the screens that I tried before worked but didn't give all the info, namely the dual climate. I didn't have my diag with me and presumed they were specific screens for that spec of car. I'll send you my VIN in a bit when I get back home. Looking hopeful. Thanks very much.

No problem, we can then at least get the correct screen for your car and that should save the ebay lottery! :-D

The screens are at a local breakers. When I was looking the other week they let me test them. That's how I know they worked but missing some info. So luckily no ebay lottery. I'll PM you later. Cheers

No, it's fine - all PMs stay in the Outbox until they have actually been seen by the recipient - that way you know it has been read or opened at least - it works slightly different to an email system. :-D

So back to the screen - 2 part numbers for your 407, one was the original as fitted at factory and now the replacement part that will be the one with the black plastic at the rear of the unit with the plug on the other side I suspect.

Original Part Number was: 6593 49
Superseded Part Number was: 9809842980 (£277.96 new from PSA)
