C5x7 AirCon amount.

Post by Stickyfinger »

Hi chaps.

Trying to find the info for the AirCon on a C5x7, 2ltrD Exclusive Tourer 138hp 2009...I am told I need to find the "weight of gas", any restrictions on the "type" of gas, I understand things have just changed.
Vin: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

A friend at a Volvo truck dealership is going to do it for free and does not have the info.

525 Grammes of refrigerant type R134a Alasdair.

It is my understanding that the changes from 2017 apply only to NEW vehicles. Although some manufacturers made the change on their models earlier (including PSA), your engine (the DW10BTED4 - same as mine) was not fitted with the different kit for the new R1234yf gas.

An article below, but the charging systems (connectors) should be different so you cannot add the new stuff as they are highly flammable and mustn't be mixed.

Cheers, that confirms what I thought, but always best to check what the main dealer tells you (they told me 625g of R134 at first then 525g after I asked (the child on the phone) to double check :)

Cheers buddy.

No worries, they often don’t check the variants properly and it really annoys me!

Details of R1234yf make some concerning reading, particularly M-B, BMW and Audi's tests of it.
DuPont and Honeywell obviously keen to see its adoption, not least because it will be very lucrative for them.
It might be much better for its GWP, but it does sound rather unpleasant and potentially hazardous stuff.

Well Volvo Trucks use R134a so I will be happy that I will not blow up if I get a leak :)

Your 'concerning reading' comment Chris, made me wonder if it was the Daimler fire video that you was referring to, if so there's been a widespread condemnation of it by the scientists.

It's been said that Daimler produced the video in order to get special treatment from the German government and be allowed to continue to save on cost by still using the less environmently friendly older stuff.

One interesting piece on the subject here:

During the summer of 2016 I noticed my aircon wasn't blowing very cold so I bought an STP recharge kit from Halfords and used it according to the instructions. It's still blowing cold however, I noticed on a fast run back from Dover last week, at times it lost its chill. Maybe time to see if the refill canister still works.

Those refill cannisters are damned near the same price as taking into the garage now JohnD, I did my last car with a cannister from the factors but I think I'm going to get it done on the proper machine this time.

I posted about this stuff a while ago and both Audi and BMW agreed with MB on its use (or lack of it) dues to high risks.

Yep, I an more than happy to have it on a proper unit that cleans, tests vac, oils and refills. I cannot see a benefit in a canister, the cost difference (if I was paying) is small.

Yes, sorry, Marc - I missed that thread.
I read the same Wikipedia item, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2,3,3,3-T ... oropropene .

I wish they'd make things clearer to the public when they make these decisions as to which vehicles and from what years the new stuff is relevant - for those that don't have access to documentation it can make it very confusing. There are still relatively few Halfords Centres that can refill cars with the new refrigerant - I suspect there is a training element involved (or at least one would hope so) and new equipment / gas to source which takes time.

It's my understanding that it isn't as cold as R134a in any case and R134a wasn't as cold as the previous R12 in my XMs - which was literally icicle cool when serviced and gassed and frostbite on the nose.

To be fair, only cars under warranty will need new stuff atm, so Halfords/General Public would not really need to know much.
