Wife's going mental!!!

Unread post by dieseldan »

Just wanted to write a quick post to share some of the blame!
I bought a '94 ZX TD Volcane 3 weeks ago and since then have done 2,500 miles and no end of sodding about with it. Trouble is, as far as my wife's concerned, there's been nothing wrong with it (and that's why she threw a piston!).
Since getting it I've changed an anti roll bar connector (knocking), upped the power by 20% (1 inch travel taken up in throttle cable....at full throttle), greased the gear linkages (very notchy), dicked about with fast, max, etc idle adjustments on injector (idling too high), changed all wheels around (right hand pull whilst steering wheel bias to left) now perfect, changed air filter (existed one rusty, black and f***ed), and much more....
So now that it's running perfectly I've taken to reading this forum all the time and have found extra things to sod about with, eg 5 mph wobble in speedo accompanied by annoying speed related clicking from the dash.....I plan to fix this when she's calmed down a bit although I have no idea what an LHM seal is!?! (see previous speedo posts!)
To this end I feel you lot should take some of the blame for the misses having the hump cos if the forum wasn't here I wouldn't find as many things to sod about with.
In all seriousness I find this forum a massive help and an interesting read.
Thanks guys
Dan

Dan - save your sanity. Ignore the wobbly speedo as it's a dash out job to replace the upper cable. Wait till you have it out to change the heater matrix, then do that and all of the dash / heater bulbs at the same time.

Dan. just change the bottom half of the speedo. This will give the speedo guage a much improved reading all be it not a wobble free one, but a hell of a lot better. You will be able to read speeds down to 5mph ish.

To know about LHM seals - buy a Xantia - or BX [8D]

Cheers guys, I'll probably have a go at the speedo this weekend - if I'm allowed. If not I may just pump up the tyres or something!
On a serious note, I'm not sure how long ago the cam belt was done. From my conversation with the previous owner it could be anywhere between 10 and 30,000 miles. How much of a risk am I taking by leaving it for another 20,000 or so and roughly how much is it to get it done. I'll have a go at anything but I think I should leave something as potentially terminal as a cam belt to a pro.
What do you reckon?

Dan -
The cambelt on Citroens are due at every 50Kmiles (80Kkm) intervals - though some (Haynes) prescribes a 38Kmiles (60Kkm) interval. Of course it's not that big importance to hit that mileage precisely - it's more within that range it's safe.
Your '94 ZX should have the spring loaded tensioner wheel for the cambelt (correct me if I'm wrong guys !).
Thus it's no big hassle to replace the cambelt getting the belt tension correct.
For idea's look at this Replacing cambelt procedure.

My tame mechanic supplied and fitted my cam belt, plus a new thermostat, for £70 At his garage. Is it really worth risking serious top end damage? If you have any doubts whatsoever, it's better to be safe than very sorry. :-)

Good call, for the car and wife!
Nah think I'll keep her, dunno what I'd get on trade in anyway. Her bigends are in great nick too!
Yeah I think I'll pay someone to do the cambelt, not worth cocking it up.
